Well Apple has ruined my night. The update failed and I've tried to restore it via iTunes but even when it is plugged in, iTunes doesn't recognise it. Anyone have any answers on how to restore this?
The procedure is different depending on the generation of Apple TV you have.

It can be tricky.
It may be helpful to show the iTunes Side Bar before starting.
how do I get that sidebar? I've been looking in Preferences but I don't see an option

Thanks very much. I followed everything you said, made sure I didn't plug the power in until I'd connected the USB cable, plugged the power in, the Mac made the USB connected sound and then I opened iTunes. It is still not there. I've got a feeling this will be a long trip to the Apple Store 😟

Are you giving it enough time to show on the Side Bar?
Do you have iTunes 11.1 installed?
I have 11.1 installed and I've had it plugged in for about 3 or 4 mins now. I would have thought that was long enough?

The problem there is where it tells the user to "Choose iTunes > Preferences (Mac) or Edit > Preferences (Windows), click Apple TV, and make sure "Look for Apple TVs" is selected."
I'm having the same problem as the thread-starter, and iTunes doesn't haev ATV under preferences...at least not for me.
There are very specific instructions to get iTunes to see an ATV and it differs for each generation.

It is often helpful to show the side bar before starting: PC - CTRL+S, Mac - OPTION+COMMAND+S
