Q: apple tv update failed. iTunes doesn't recognise the TV

Well Apple has ruined my night. The update failed and I've tried to restore it via iTunes but even when it is plugged in, iTunes doesn't recognise it. Anyone have any answers on how to restore this?

I had to do a factory reset but it would only work on the Windows PC. If it's not showing on either the Mac or PC then I would ensure you have iTunes 11.1 installed

I understand. What I meant was in iTunes itself, not the settings

It was fairly instant. Maybe 10 seconds, It did need to install the drivers for it though. I was on Windows 7

Is there any chance you could provide me a link to the W7 ATV drivers, or did yours download to the pc automatically?

Thanks. I think I have it now. I tried everything on windows with no luck but I brought the ATV down to my wifi router and plugged it in with an ethernet and mixed it with the helpless apple suggestions from the support page and it seems to be entering recovery mode into my mac.

For anyone reading this who encounters the same problem, completly unplug the ATV from everything, hook it up to your computer by USB, then by Ethernet to your Router / Airport, open itunes and then put in the power cable.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions!! Hopefully I can get on with enjoying the new update now!!

It could be the cable.  Some cables designed for recharging cell phones don't work, apparently.

Though Apple was no help at all, I was able to get a MICRO USB to USB cable at Walmart ($10).  Best Buy said they had one for $5, but Walmart was much easier to get to tonight.  Hooked the ATV to my iMac with iTunes on.  (Moved the ATV and power cord to my iMac.)  iTunes immediately recognized the ATV and asked if I wanted to restore it.  I did, it took about 15 minutes to do it's thing which included the new problem child update.  Afterwards it was exactly the same as a brand new ATV .. EVERYTHING had to be redone.  Very frustrating due to the time wasted, hassle of getting the cable, having to pay for a cable I wouldn't have otherwise needed, having to re-invent the wheel regarding all of our settings in the ATV, but it's finally working properly.  That said, Apple owes me 3 hours of my life back.

This makes me furious! Why should I have to go buy a cable that should have come with the ATV in the first place if it's needed to restore it. I'm a long time Mac person but I have to say my patience with Apple is wearing very thin right now as I sit here with a useless ATV and no cable to restore it and the prospect of having to spend a bunch of time and money on this during my weekend.

After I try to recovery my ATV I get this messege "The Apple TV could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build"  Any advice?  I'm desperate.

The update bricked my third gen last night too. I tried all of the above to no avail. Tried several times in fact. Bricked. I have both the second and third generation but the second gen updated last night without incident and works fine.

Same exact here. Did both updates at the same time this morning. 2nd Gen is up and running. 3rd Gen is still sitting there while I try to locate another micro cable. Maybe one of my neighbors has one. Lots of folks reporting they've had to try multiple cables before the ATV is recognized in iTunes (Mac for me).
