Q: Air Drop between iMac and iphone5 not working?

I'm guessing I'm probably making some rookie mistake here - but I can't seem to get this to work?  I can see airdrop in the control menu on my iphone5 (I've updated to iOS7) and I can open airdrop on my imac (purchased 2012 - running most current version of Operating System).  However, neither device seems to recognize that the other is there?  It doesn't show I have anyone available to share with?

Thanks in advance!

I think you can only cancel it if it is in the process of sending. Once it has been sent, there is nothing you can do from your end I do not think. Sorry man. What did you airdrop just out of curiosity?

Once it is sent, there isn't anything you can do unless the recipient has not accepted it as Airdrop has to be "accepted" by the recipient. Did you get any indication that the transfer was successful?

I'm here because I just googled "Why can't I airdrop between my mac and my iphone". I am also mystified this isn't supported. What really is the point then of Airdrop? My macs in the house all have file sharing, so no need for them to talk to each other through airdrop and the iphones don't need to swap photos like this - all we want is to be able to drop photos between our phones and our desktops in the house...and I read this is not possible now?

Sheesh what a crock. Again - what is the point of why most iphone/imac users would even turn arirdop on if it can't swap between phones and desktops?

Thumbs up MegaMatt.  They implemented a seeming useful feature in a mostly useless way.  Why would I need to airdrop between two macs on the same network?  File sharing already does that.

Airprop between two phones would be useful if it worked over cellular data, but since the phones have to be on the same network for it to work what's the point?  Might as well just turn my phone and show you the picture.

The single best use for airdrop would be to move pictures I took on my phone from my phone to my iMac, so I can use my desktop to manipulate them, email, backup etc.

It's just another example of Apple dumbing-down their systems and features so that instead of being functional they're "simple"... which for Apple increasingly means "don't work right".

I firmly believe Apple will NOT fix this because they want people to move away from using desktop computers alltogether.  They want the Apple universe to be a purely mobile universe.  Look at Mavericks.  It implements improvements only for laptops.  For my iMac, everything is slower and features have been stripped away.  But I get better battery life!  Oh, wait....

here's another one for the, "I can't believe it's not possible on a Mac" growing file..... how do you get your iPhone to do 1:30 seconds or 90 seconds as a countdown timer?.....

The ONLY way I've found it possible is to get Siri to do it?..... Can that be 'more' stupid?..... so let me get this right Apple..... you have built a useful timer into the iPhone.... but it can NOT do increments of 30 seconds???? unless...... you voice command Siri to do it?..... What happens when speaking this command is NOT possible?...... like in a meeting.... or a loud venue?.....

is this for real??..... or am I just missing something simple.... in which case I'm an idiot?.......

Your iPhone is not a Mac. Please repeatedly read aloud the last 3 words of your post.

Well, if you want to be pedantic, I suppose you could say the iPhone is not a Mac?..... but then again, one could argue, that Apple and Mac are synonyms....... just like Microsoft and Windows....

I think you're missing the point completely though...... the fact is..... it IS possible to do increments of 30 seconds...... but ONLY via Siri..... if anyone needs to read something again.... I think it's YOU!!....

I'm not too sure why you feel the need to attempt to belittle others on 'minor' points?.... because of your tiny pecker perhaps?..... I know not, nor care not.... have you taken this as a 'personal insult' because I dare challenge an Apple product? Oh..... poor little diddums....

Saying the iPhone is not a Mac is nowhere near being pedantic. It's a simple fact. Learning the difference may help you understand how to get the most out of these products.

Nobody with a modicum of intelligence would think "Apple" and "Mac", "Microsoft" and "Windows", or "iPhone" and "Mac" are synonyms. I suggest you spend a few minutes educating yourself on the difference between individual products by a company, and between company names and product names. It's quite simple.

Clearly you've yet to discover the AppStore where dozens of additional timer applications are available with features to suit every requirement. Take your pick. You are not limited to only using the built-in timer app if you find it doesn't suit your needs. Try looking further than just what comes with the phone.

I didn't say the iPhone was a Mac..... what I was inferring, was that the iPhone is a product of the Apple/Mac brand..... and yes, you are being pedantic..... and trivial..... so it's an Apple product? Big deal.... you're the one who has taken it personally..... you haven't even acknowledged, you've missed the point completely..... I was asking for help finding the seconds increment in the Timer, which is available through Siri, but NOT through other settings.

I'm not quite sure what 'need' you are trying to fulfil by being so petty, and taking issue with me calling the iPhone a Mac product?..... hahahaha..... "the iPhone is a Mac.... the iPhone is a Mac".... lol.... this must REALLY upset you?....

"Nobody... clichè... would think"..... is a pretty big assumption on your part.... and you don't have these 'facts' to support your argument..... "everybody"..... is not on your side and supporting your case...... and I also didn't say, Apple/Mac/Microsoft/Windows/iPhone/Mac are synonyms..... your 'modicum of intelligence' allows you to read but NOT comprehend.....

you don't hold a monopoly on common sense.... you are not the authority you seem to assume.... are you REALLY small or something?..... like 4'7" or something?..... hahahaha.....this is really funny...I'm enjoying it.... a 'little man' who comes to forums to 'bully' people about semantics.... you're really no 'help' at all.....

what's your problem?.... my problem is that Siri can do what the settings can't in the timer app.... and you've taken issue with me calling the iPhone a Mac?.... lol.....

Airdrop between OSX and IOS is not available, if you wish to ask why, ask Apple rather than us. We do not have that knowledge.

I didn't say the iPhone was a Mac.

You started your post by stating:

here's another one for the, "I can't believe it's not possible on a Mac" growing file

then immediately followed it referring to the iPhone:

how do you get your iPhone to do 1:30 seconds or 90 seconds as a countdown timer?

So you are obviously confused about which product you are using. That's why I suggested you learn the difference between company/product names and different products.

I was asking for help finding the seconds increment in the Timer, which is available through Siri, but NOT through other settings.

Actually, nowhere do you specifically state you wanted to be limited to only using the built-in Clock app. You actually asked:

how do you get your iPhone to do 1:30 seconds or 90 seconds as a countdown timer?

The answer to that, as I've already stated, is to use one of the many third-party timer apps from the AppStore, or (as you've already discovered), use Siri with the built-in Clock app.

"the iPhone is a Mac.... the iPhone is a Mac".... lol.... this must REALLY upset you?....

Nope, not at all - it just demonstrates your stupidity, which I find rather amusing, so thanks for giving me something to laugh at.

    I also didn't say, Apple/Mac/Microsoft/Windows/iPhone/Mac are synonyms.

I didn't say you did. Re-read what I wrote - this time paying attention to the pairing of the words, denoted by the punctuation.

one could argue, that Apple and Mac are synonyms....... just like Microsoft and Windows....

I guess someone else must've hijacked your computer and typed the above line for you then?

because of your tiny pecker perhaps?....
are you REALLY small or something?..... like 4'7" or something?

You seem to have a strange fascination regarding my physical attributes? Is that your particular fetish? Maybe some counselling would help - or go watch the latest Hobbit movie to satisfy your dwarf cravings...

Anyway, to re-cap: Without using Siri, there is no option to set seconds for timers in the built-in iOS Clock app. If you want that option, tell Apple, or choose a third-party timer app with that functionality from the AppStore. Is that simple enough for you?
