Q: Air Drop between iMac and iphone5 not working?

I'm guessing I'm probably making some rookie mistake here - but I can't seem to get this to work?  I can see airdrop in the control menu on my iphone5 (I've updated to iOS7) and I can open airdrop on my imac (purchased 2012 - running most current version of Operating System).  However, neither device seems to recognize that the other is there?  It doesn't show I have anyone available to share with?

Thanks in advance!

I do hope that this changes. I use iCloud so the wireless transfer of photos it not a big deal, but it seems that I am forced to import videos from my iPhone into iMovie to get them onto my Macbook , regardless as to whether or not I intend to use iMovie?  Correct me if I'm wrong here.

In the meantime everyone should check out Deskconnect http://deskconnect.com/ this provides pretty much exactly what we are all wanting.

It's beyond ridiculous, though, that a third party has to provide such basic functionality.

If you'll check the features of the new OS coming this fall, you'll see that AirDrop is being advertised as working between Mac OS and iOS:

    Finally!

And also finally, you can remove yourself from a text message conversation.

It just hasn't been implemented as yet.  As I recall Tim Cook announced at the Developers Conference that with the release of Yosemite and iOS 8 this feature would be include.  Patience.

The fact that a feature is coming doesn't help anyone right now. The bottom line is that you can't do it.

Thank you for taking the time to point out the perfectly obvious.  Apparently 6 pages of explanations about how it's not possible right now is completely ruined by the mere mention of the fact that it will be possible in the future.

I can't either. I have an early 2009 iMac running Yosemite, and an iPhone 5 running iOS 8.1.

    Apple says:

In OS X Yosemite, AirDrop helps you quickly transfer files between your Mac and nearby Mac computers or iOS devices using Wi-Fi.

I'll be damned if I can figure out how!

I've been using DeskConnect for a while now.

I think the problem here is what Apple DOES NOT tell you. They presume everyone has a new model computer.

I don't think AirDrop will ever work on old Macs. They were never designed to support AirDrop. That's pointed out in the AirDrop support files all over the Mac websites.

Here's an article about a user who tried it and had very little success:

    http://recode.net/2014/10/16/os-x-yosemite-arrives-what-does-it-mean-for-older-m acs/

Older Macs support the new OS X Yosemte but not AirDrop.

    This Apple article:

Mac Basics: AirDrop lets you send files from your Mac to nearby Macs and iOS devices

    States:

    System Requirements

To see if your Mac works with AirDrop, make sure you’re in the Finder by clicking the desktop (the background area of your screen), or by clicking the Finder icon in the Dock. Then, check to see if AirDrop is listed as an option in the Go menu. If you don't see AirDrop listed, your Mac doesn't support this feature.

In order to transfer files between a Mac and and an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, your iOS device needs iOS 7 or later installed and your Mac needs to be a 2012 or later model. To transfer files between two Mac computers, you need one of the Mac models listed below and OS X Lion or later.

    • MacBook Pro (Late 2008 or newer)*
    • MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer)
    • MacBook (Late 2008 or newer)*
    • iMac (Early 2009 or newer)
    • Mac Mini (Mid 2010 or newer)
    • Mac Pro (Early 2009 with AirPort Extreme card, or Mid 2010)

*The MacBook Pro (17-Inch Late 2008) and the white MacBook (Late 2008) do not support AirDrop.

So, for iPhone to iMac it has to be a 2012 or later iMac. Mine is a early 2009. No soup for me.
