What it is telling you to do. Connect it to iTunes directly via USB.
>I dont have a micro usb to usb cable
You will need to buy or borrow one. -

You are not supposed to need one. This is the manual option to correct a failed update. Does not make sense for them to provide one when less than 1% of people will need it.

Sep 20, 2013 4:01 PM in response to Brian Cook4by fllyZr4,I suppose but then the update should be recommended to be done over Ethernet and not Wifi, too many variables make it likely the wireless fail or whatnot.
either way thanks for the help... Ill have to buy a cable tomorrow.

Sep 20, 2013 4:28 PM in response to Brian Cook4by takom,Read the rapidly growing posts .. this isn't 1% failure to update, more like 50% or better.

Sep 20, 2013 4:30 PM in response to Brian Cook4by takom,BTW .. what about people who don't have another Apple product. Am I expected to carry my 27" iMac into the family room to hook it up to our Apple TV with a cable I don't own?

I found carrying the ATV to my iMac a little easier. THe ATV does not have to be plugged in to your TV to do the reset. I had to buy the USB cable

Sep 20, 2013 4:51 PM in response to Atomic Alby fllyZr4,Seem so "unApple-like" to do something like this... specially with the "no wires" momentum but I will get the €9.99 cable to use this just once...

Sep 20, 2013 4:59 PM in response to Atomic Alby takom,I called Apple to try to get help. You'd think that when they have a major update, they'd be willing to assist people with problems .. nope. I purchased our Apple TV 8 months ago .. It would cost $20 to talk to them one time.
So much for good Apple Customer Service.
One other thing .. the connection on the back of the Apple TV is a MICRO USB, not a mini usb. If you're going to run to the store to try and beat the hundreds of other people who will need to get a cable to get their Apple TV's to work, make sure you get the correct cable.
Personally, I think I'm done with Apple TV at this point .. I'd rather pay out another $100 for a different manufacturers device that doesn't crash just by simply getting an update.
Yet another black eye for this once great company.

Sep 20, 2013 8:18 PM in response to fllyZr4by takom,Well, my wife talked me out of throwing the ATV out the window. Though Apple was no help at all, I was able to get a MICRO USB to USB cable at Walmart ($10). Best Buy said they had one for $5, but Walmart was much easier to get to tonight. Hooked the ATV to my iMac with iTunes on. iTunes immediately recognized the ATV and asked if I wanted to restore it. I did, it took about 15 minutes to do it's thing which included the new problem child update. Afterwards it was exactly the same as a brand new ATV .. EVERYTHING had to be redone. Very frustrating due to the time wasted, hassle of getting the cable, having to pay for a cable I wouldn't have otherwise needed, having to re-invent the wheel regarding all of our settings in the ATV, but it's finally working properly. That said, Apple owes me 3 hours of my life back.

Had to buy a cable at a local store 15€... connected to Itunes on an old PC hanging out the house. Restored and went through the hassle of reconfiguring everything again.
