Extreme battery drain in IOS 7- iPad Mini Unusable after Upgrade

In Settings, turn on Airplane mode, then reset your device by holding Power + Home button 15 seconds until you see the Apple logo. Power back on, then turn off Airplane mode.

I don't know what your problem might be, but - aside from the usual litary of function-reducers:

...plug your device directly into the wall outlet; don't use a hub. Also, be aware that battery drainage will happen faster the lower the battery.

One user had success with this procedure:

Start by killing all of the apps in the Quick Launch ribbon. If the problem persists it is a built in app, most likely Mail if you have a Push account such as MS Exchange, iCloud, Hotmail, or Yahoo. Go to Settings/Mail,Contacts,Calendars, tap on the name of any Push accounts and turn off all of the switches (mail, contacts, calendar, notes, etc). Then reboot the phone by holding HOME and SLEEP until an Apple logo appears. Finally go back into settings and turn the switches back on.

This process will kill any pending transmissions that are failing and retrying.

same deal here. Ipad 4 going from 100% to 16% over night in what should be stanby mode . ios 6 used 5% in that time. Unexceptable. i thought they tested this os? on what just the 5s phones?

I've disabled background app refresh, push for all accounts set to every 15 minutes, brightness all the way down, no apps running in background. Auto update apps is off.

This is not acceptable. It's dropped 2 percent while I tryped this post!!!!

I Have tried every trick I can find including the one above about airplane mode then reset and it does absolutely nothing! Very frustrated with this as I just ordered a reconditioned iPhone 5 and I see they are having the same issues. How could this have been missed in all the time they beta tested ios7 ?

Oh man... I feel your pain. I have a ipad mini but didn't update because I had a bad feeling about the battery. I'm staying on 6.1.2 for as long as I can. It took me months to get my ipad mini battery running just right on 6.1.2. Just knew if I updated again I would have to deal with battery drain issues!

Ios 7 looks pretty cool! But having my battery last almost 14 hours on 6.1.2. I'll stick with the old. Didn't take long for battery issues to pop up on the forums. I don't think Apple does a lot of testing. Get it working and let the public find the issues. 7.0.1 already!! Love u apple but, you have to stop releasing software that isn't finished! But what do I know! I only spend money on your products. It's sad......very very sad. Reboot! Reset! Turn on! Turn off! Lol.

My Ipad 3 SAS also draining the battery. Then I took some activos with the tips I saw and it almost stopped the drain.

But now I have another problem: it took about 6 hours to recharge the battery.

I expect that Apple will solve this issues urgently.

The lesson I take IS that in the future I will wait some time days before making an update.

I don't understand why one has to perform these steps? Why can't we just update w/o doing these steps? I've done these reboot, close apps..ect. I would love to update but if I see battery problems already! This is a bad start to ios 7. And for fixing the battery drain. I wouldn't hold your breath. New updates= battery problems and bugs. Why put people in this annoying spot?

I'm not downing on Apple, but I feel like this went on last year. Lol. Here we go again! Who knows how long I'll be waiting for a fix?! Goes like this, new update, fix battery drain issues, but the new update never does. Last year every update made the battery worse! 6.1.3- 6.0.1 and 6.0.2 I never had battery issues. I'm still on 6.1.2 and after months and months I'm able to get 14 hours on my ipad mini. At first I would get 6 hours! If I want short battery life I would buy a Android tablet.

I wish you all the best of luck. But the new look and features of ios 7 won't sway me away from 6.1.2....not until Apple really addresses the battery drain. Not gonna charge my ipad mini everyday!!

I remember the last update, and quite a few users were complaining about major battery drain. Then, after that, Apple came in with an follow-up that (mostly) fixed the issue.

is the battery going down overnight? With the cover closed? I found out that mine was not really shutting off at night with the cover closed the way it used too. See how to make it really turn off by closing the cover, elsewere in this same discussion area. texerrn2

Same problem on Ipad 2 - was enjoying excellent battery life - after upgrading to IOS7, my Ipad, while in standby mode with cover closed, will drain from 100% to shutdown in under 4 hours! That's faster than watching continuous video in IOS6. I'm sure there is some upcoming IOS7 fix, but please hurry! I typically use my Ipad on long air flights, but this battery life reduction will render it pretty useless.

I'm having the same issue on my iPad 2. All settings set back to what they were in iOS6 and the iPad is dead overnight. I thought that the case may have come open. Last night the iPad was at 50% flat on my desk with a book on top of it....just picked it up and it's dead. I use my iPad all day, every day for work. This has got to be fixed. On a related note, I've noticed faster battery drain on my iPhone 4s as well. It's not as pronounced, but it is draining faster than it did on iOS6. Thought new OS meant better battery life?!?!? Overall, I think Apple dropped the ball on this one 😟 Sad day.

So what I DID discover is that the upgrade resets the Lock/Unlock switch to OFF under the general settings. I thought I closing my cover turned it off, but I could see the display still lit even with the cover closed. So enabling Lock/Unlock gets me back to the way it worked in IOS6.
