Q: Search in Mail (exchange account) gives duplicate results

ok - so assume that I know a bit about what I am asking - not a POP issue - not a corrupt exchange account, etc.

When looking into the inbox for the account - ONLY one copy exists.

When going to the accounts and then inbox - ONLY one copy exists

When looking into the all inboxes (irrelevant for this case - but I thought I would throw it in in case something thinks that might be it) - ONLY one copy exists.

When searching in the inbox of the account (wether I choose all mailboxes or current mailbox) - I see two of each email.

When going to the accounts and then inbox and searching (wether I choose all mailboxes or current mailbox) - I see two of each email.

When searching in the all inboxes (wether I choose all mailboxes or current mailbox) - I see two of each email.

One copy is NOT in sent/deleted.

Even if I open (therefore removing 'unread status') all of the multiple copies the duplicates still show in search.

The unread counts always show just the actual email when looking at the inboxes...and always show both the 'real message' and the duplicate in the count of the searches.

They can both be opened - though they produce the same exact info.

When I click edit (from the search) - only one gets the radio button to do something with it - and only that same one can use a gesture (move/trash/more/etc).

When the one without the ability to be edited/deleted gets opens - the unread status of the other does NOT change (on phone or server).

When the one that can be edited/deleted gets removed - the duplicate remains in the search (and cannot be deleted!!!!!!!!!!!!!).

Personally - I never searched this way before io7 - but some of the users I support did.  There is essentially a ghosting happening here.

PRE-ios7 experience - the user (who has been doing this for years) needs to move all emails from his Inbox from Mr. Joe Blow into Mr. Joe Blow's folder.  previously only inbox emails were visible (first issue - now the whole darn account is searched) and previously only one copy of an email was visible (second - and really important issue).  He would select all and move them.

Now - all of the emails from Mr. Joe Blow are duplicated - and he has to scroll through a mountain in order to select the ones he wants to move.  The ghosted emails do not go away - not even when the 'real' email has been moved to another folder or completely deleted.

So - this is irritating today - but in a month will be completely debilitating.

This needs to be addressed by apple ASAP!!!!!!!!!!

Just fyi - there is no email syncing happening - there is no gmail anything - there is no @me account duplicating - there is no other reason for the nonsense.  In case it wasn't obvious from the title - it is an exchange set up - not pop - not imap.

AND - it is happening on multiple phones.  THOUGHTS???????????????

Same problem here: my iPhone with iOS 7 has exactly those problems and my iPad on the same user accounts and iOS 6 doesn't have any problems! This proofs that it is definitely a problem of iOS 7 and Apple has to fix it really urgent! I'm thinking about informing important Blogs about this case, but that's not really good for my apple shares...

We are haveing the same issue on iPhone 4s, 5s and iPad 3rd gen, all running ios7.  This issue doen't seem to be affecting everyone as some of my users with iPhone 5s on ios7 aren't having the issue?

We are also running mobileiron mobile device management.  The users I have still running

    ios6 are having no issues.

The rough translation from babylon.com is:

That is you have yet to speak: The same orangutans at ipаd2, iphone4 - duplicated letter, with lower opens, and the upper is not. +Yet and not all are downloaded from the server: when wifi 30 mbit download is minutes to 10. The reading of data requires two steps6 This was not.

OK, just to add my name to the chorus - this has now been noticed by my 40 or so users and the calls are starting to come in.  Sure would love to see a fix.  This is going to be a huge headache!

Same issue here, iOS 7 on an iPad 3 - Wi-Fi version.

Apple do you have a plan to address this issue?

I am having the same issue.  I'm a sr director for a Fortune 100 company so this is not limited to small shops.  This duplicate email on search but is negatively impacting my efficiency of getting through emails on my phone.  Apple, you have to resolve this as it's going to cause me to switch to an Android based phone.  Can't deal worth the on efficiency.  Not only are the emails duplicated on a search, but you can only delete one of the duplicates.

Same issue here. Regret to have upgraded to 7.03, miss iOS 6 every day. Very frustrating to hear problem is ignored. The same case with a keyboard problem elsewhere in this support forum.

Same issue here, enterprise estate consists of some 3,500 iOS devices (Mobile Iron MDM).

Interestingly the Spotlight Search function doesn't duplicate the emails. Limited use as a work around but might be an option for some users while we wait for a fix.

I'm on Mobile Iron MDM as well.  How about others?  Could this be a common theme?

I also am running into users having issues searching for keywords. The results do not sort in order and there is no real explanation as to how it is being ordered in the list. Wonder if anyone has any updates?

it seened, that problem occurs only with MS Exchange mailboxes.

Here is Apple answer on my ticket:

"К сожалению, на данный момент новой информации нет. Поскольку данная проблема связана с Microsoft Exchange, мы не можем предугадать как данный сервис стороннего производителя будет взаимодействовать с iOS 7. В том числе невозможно сказать с уверенностью о том, позволит ли выход iOS 7.1.0 исправить данную проблему."

So, you can see, that Apple do not know how this problem could be resolved.

No, Not using any MDM for Exchange email here and we are seeing it too. So it is not related to MDM platform being used.

I think I've discovered the cause but don't have a solution, maybe someone else does. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe iOS 7 introduced server-side searches for Exchange mail, so it searches both the local (downloaded) and server message stores (this seems to be true only when you search from the Mail app, but not from Spotlight). For downloaded messages, it's returning two hits, one from each store, instead of removing the server-side copy from the hits. I'm pretty sure this is what's going on, because the local hits  appear immediately, followed by a brief pause (I assume as the server is processing the query), and then the duplicates.

In fact, I've found it's even worse: for server-only hits it  returns a hit for each level in the folder hierarchy; for example, if the message is filed under /Business/Letters/CompanyX, it will display 3 copies, one for each folder level.

I guess one possible workaround until Apple fixes this would be to disable server-side search by disabling full-text indexing in EMC:

    Set-MailboxDatabase <MailboxDatabaseName> -IndexEnabled $false

Outlook cached-mode wouldn't be affected, but Outlook online and OWA wouldn't be able to search.
