iOS 7 usb internet tethering is not working?

Before updating to iOS 7 - I would tether my iphone to my laptop using a usb cable (no wifi hotspot or bluetooth).

Now that I have updated I can only use wifi hotspot or bluetooth - connecting to my laptop with via a cable is not tethering my device.

What can I do to fix this?

iPhone 5, iOS 7

Hello BHRD,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

For more information on this, take a look at:

USB troubleshooting

If you are using USB to connect your computer to Personal Hotspot and you are unable to get an Internet connection, check your computer's network settings. You may need to adjust your computer's network settings to disconnect and reconnect the USB Ethernet interface.

Best of luck,

Mario

I have the exact same problem with iPhone5/iOS7. Used to exclusively use USB Internet sharing (more secure than wireless). Tried to follow USB troubleshooting instructions, and no success disabling/enabling iPhone USB connection. Tried duplicating and doing same thing with that, no sucess. Tried deleting USB connection and then adding a new one, but no way to add the USB connection (guessing that's because of same reason for problem-- not detecting the USB network connection).

Problem is not the network sharing in iPhone since Bluetooth is working.

Hi All

i am new here but came on for the same reason, iphone 5 not tethering via USB to my PC.

After speaking to Apple tech support and being told by one of their "senior techs" that the iphone 5 is not designed to tether via USB only wifi or bluetooth I thought it best to look around on here to see if there are any suggestions.

The problem I had was as follows (in case anyone else has the same);

a. iphone connected to pcvia usb and pc recognised phone (itunes synced and network connections says connected).

b. personal hotspot on and identifies "1 connection"

c. IE and Chrome both unable to open pages as saying no internet connection.

Seems like there are many on here with the same issue but not fix.

I HAVE SOLVED THIS after hours and hours!

1. Go to ..... Control Panel > Network Connections

2. Right Click on Apple Mobile Local Area Connection (should say it is connected)

3. Click on Properties

4. New window comes up. Click on Advanced tab

5. Under Internet Connection Sharing header, tick the box that says "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection.

6. Click the OK box at bottom of window.

Since doing this i have been connected to the internet and finally able to open emails etc.

I hope this helps other PC users. I should probably point out that I am by no means a computer specialist and so cannot confirm how secure this connection is so if anyone out there can advise on this and maybe of a safer way to activate the connection then please feel free to let me know.

Thanks and good luck.

G

PS. sorry if this is not relevant to Mac users, I'm not one but if it offers a start point to solution then great.

Ok. If iPhone 5 is not designed to connect via USB, I may understand it. But...

Mine is iPhone 4 and was designed to connect via USB. Why am I forced to loose that specification? My work requires to go places with no electricity, no wireless connection, just the land itself, far from towns, cities, etc... I pay my carrier for an unlimited connection which usually I use on a hill where no civic structures exist. In that case using blutooth empties my battery, but I need my phone for potential emergency situations there, I do not prefer to connect via bluetooth. There using USB connections comes to the stage!

I may use bluetooth while charging the iphone via USB, but in that case i will loose more energy from the computer's baterry + iphone will be charging less in the meanwhile because it will spend some of the charge to bluetooth immediatelly. So, in this scenario, I both loose iPhone and computer. 🙂

Ok. Who will I sue if I can survive any emergencies? Apple? For forcing me not to use one of the basic opportunities that my iPhone gave me? Maybe that's why I bought iPhone 4 afew years ago! Why are you taking that from my hands? Will you also make a refund? 🙂

And what is this not-caring attitude? I am not allowed to go back to previous iOS and I am loosing my phone's one of most useful options because some genius (?!) wanted it so?

I promise you I won't buy apple products again if they really make me loose this and any previous options of my iPhone 4.

grrrrr..... (angry)

Addition to my previous post: My brother came into town today. He uses an iPhone5. He hasn't been upgraded to iOS7 yet. I told him that answer by "senior tech" saying iPhone5 was not designed for connecting internet by USB, and he said he had already used his iPhone 5 with iOS6 on the bus while coming here.

There is really something big going on wrong there, I guess.

Askin, demanding, waiting for fix for enabled USB connection via iPhone. I WANT IT BACK! 🙂

Are you hearing?

the problem is the latest itunes version!!!

1. show hidden folders:

go to terminal and enter: defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -boolean true;killall Finder

2. go back with time machine

go to: System/Library/Extensions

3. restore the file: AppleUsbEthernetHost.kext to your desktop

4. close time machine

5. replace the new file in System/Library/Extensions

et voilà!

Hi JoshiKHCG,

This quickly goes beyond me - so please bear with me on this.

I have time machine.

If I show all hidden files via terminal (this I know how to do), then, can I go back in time machine and retrieve a single file? (the one you mentioned) and then replace the file in System/Library/Extensions?

I will try to retrieve a single file through time machine when I get home...

Thanks!
