This is like saying why doesn't my iphone 4 have a fingeprint scanner, its upgraded to ios 7 so it should work.....

Have you ever thought that maybe its on the upgraded phone because its hardware that has to be incorporated into the phone to work.

Maybe they didn't invent it till after it came out (such as airdrop and the fingerprint scanner)

Also why would you upgrade a 3 year old phone with the hardware such as that wifi chip? when its a old slow device. If you had a new product that you brought out would you upgrade the old product aswell when you can make more money, Apple is a company they try to make money and that is what they are doing.

If you don't like it don't buy it.

Fair enough if that question was innocent but the replies below just needed some common sense, their proberbly 10 year olds posting pointlessly anyway.

Totally do NOT agree with the analogue of finger scanner on iPhone. Iphone 4 does not have the hardware, but has Bluetooth and wifi. iPhone 4S is slower than 5, but big difference? No. The biggest difference is the look. 4s does not support Airdrop either. But the ridiculous thing is third party can make 4s has similar function. Apple don't want to do the same thing.

Apple would appreciate you such a considerable costumer that when they have a new model the old models should not be supported. But, millions iPhone 4/4s user are tighten by 3 year contract by their carriers. Your common sense just let them throw their phone away. Or DONT buy from the start.

I dont buy any of this. The reason is simple and its the same reason Siri only worked with the 4S and not the 4. Apple claimed the 4 didnt have the processing power for Siri and that was a crock, All Siri does is hand off the voice recording to the clould and the Siri servers and recives the response. Ask any jailbroke iPhone 4 owner who was able to use Siri via proxy servers!

Marketing is the reason AirDrop is not included for the iPhone 4s, it's not hardware related (Bluetoooth or Wifi). No special hardware is required. Android has had equivilent AirDrop facilities on much older phones that the iPhone 4 and it doesn't require special chips. That's all nonense.

Come on guys, we know how the Apple marketing machine works. They restrict the sofwtare options on older models to push users up to the lastest model - its not rocket science!

Ask yourself if the iPhone4 is capable of sharing it's WiFi for tethering? If the anwser is yes, then you know that you have created an ad-hoc Wifi connection between your iPhone and the other device! That and Bluetooth is all thats required for AirDrop to work!

I don't care whether you buy it or not. It is fact. You can believe anything you want, but belief is not the same as fact. Airdrop does NOT use Ad Hoc. It uses a feature of the BlueTooth 4 specification that is physically not implemented in the WiFi chips before the 4S. (See http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19512_7-20116316-233/bluetooth-4.0-what-is-it-and-d oes-it-matter/) The same feature that allows devices such as a Fitbit pedometer to send data to the iPhone without actually being paired. And 2 iPhones to communicate without being paired.

Ignorance is a wonderful thing; you can prove anything with it.

Totally agree with Nik about the Apple marketing machine. They put profit first and make it more and more important than the user experience and technology advances.

iPhone 5 and 4S don't have that big different, but they need to find some difference as selling point.

BlueTooth 4.0 was there on 4S, and wifi was there. "But we should make 5 different."
"Why we just put them together, call it wifi-direct on 5? Then, technically, we can claim they are different“ ”Yeah! Great, one more difference, not easy to find, huh?" "What if customers complain that is not big advantage and not neccesary?" " Dont worry, There is always some geek only interested in tivial details. Leak some information, they will discuss that for a while. it help us defending ourselves" "Call those customers care about functions ignorant, because they wont know every detail we have. We can tell them it is significant advance." "Then, how about other competators, they can easily have this function" "dont worry about losing some customers, that isnt important. There will still some keep buying every model we make. We got way more profit of one iPhone than others. Just let them believe we are the best, others *****"

Someone said Google is our friend. The same feeling, but another way. Google always trying to offer the best services to customers. Keep pushing new breakthrough techniques to make customers experincing better. Apple used to be this way. But, I didnt feel this, since they got rid of Google Map from the iOS as default, and brought the joking Apple Map.

Umm, you said, and I quote "It uses a feature of the BlueTooth 4 specification that is physically not implemented in the WiFi chips before the 4S.”

First point: Isn’t it the 4S we are talking about without AirDrop?

Second point: You seemed to have disproved your own point, congrats :-)

That aside, thanks for the link, I read something similar just after I posted my reply (I was a tad hasty I admit in terms of my technical asumptions). So technical specifics aside, my point stands. The only reason you can’t AirDrop on an un-jailbroken iPhone 4S is marketing, not technical. As was the case for Siri on the 4S and not the 4.
