I had this problem too after I replaced the battery in my iphone 5S. I tried the suggestion of signing out of Apple ID and then logging back in, but still had the same problem. It turned out an update was available, and once the update was installed and my phone restarted, the fingerprint ID "magically" activated. Hope the fix is just as simple for you!
It had nothing to do with apps. I went to settings>general>software update, and that's where I found the update (now if I go there, it just says "your software is up to date"). And after my phone restarted after the update, then the Touch ID started working again (and the "add fingerprint" option also became available).
Thanks! Happening to me in 2017 and more likely my problem than a consequence of a screen replacement, since it's happening to my iPhone 6 and ipad Air 2, and neither has had a screen replacement. My debit card expires this month though and new one only arrived today. Hopefully once authorisation charge disappears everything will work!
Good for you. My software is up to date but my touch id still not works. 😟
You need to "Turn Passcode On" and then add a passcode. Touch ID will not be avaialble unless there is a passcode in effect.
I actually ran into this same issue. My passcode is turn on and enabled, but the Touch ID is still grayed out. Did a soft reset and still the nothing. Any suggestions?
Having the same issue as described by "edward 46".
My ended up being a faulty hardware issue on the scanner. Apple had to replace my phone.
I fixed a friends by discovering that the Apple ID that the phone was signed into did not have a credit card verified to it therefore the setting was greyed out, it had nothing to charge to when using touch id to purchase apps. Check your iTunes payment details in settings>store etc..
Go to Settings> iTunes and App Store.
Sign out of your account.
Sign back in then go back to Settings > General > Passcode and Touch ID and you should be able to turn it back on.
Dib.
That doesn't work either
I had the same problem and it turned out that my credit card on the payment information wasn't verified. I corrected it, restarted the phone and....Bob's your uncle
What update? Did you just update an app then it touch id works?
