error 17 when restoring new iphone 5s

Everything I've seen on the internets points to either security software, firewall, or a modified hosts file blocking your computer from connecting to gs.apple.com. You should try the steps from http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694 under the section titled "Unable to contact the iOS software update server gs.apple.com".

These errors may be the result of the connection to gs.apple.com being redirected or blocked. Follow these steps to resolve these errors:

1. Install the latest version of iTunes.

3. Check the hosts file. The restore will fail if there is an active entry to redirect gs.apple.com. Follow the advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting steps to edit the hosts file or revert to a default hosts file. See "Blocked by configuration: (Mac OS X/Windows) > Rebuild network information."
4. Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.
5. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.

I have the same problem. Impossible to restore my fresh and new iPhone 5S.

For me the problem was in hosts file.

To edit with admin privilege. it's located in /private/etc/hosts

i got the same problem, found a solution from macrumor and solved my trouble. If you have updated from a jailbroken version, this may be the answer.

I had two entries in the hosts file redirecting gs.apple.com. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction as my phone is now back to normal. As to what added the line, I am very curious.....

Generally either an attempt to, or the successful jailbreaking of a device that changes the host file.

I have the same issue. Picked up my 5S 64GB yesterday and tried updating to 7.0.4. I get error 17.

I have Mavericks installed on my iMac. Checked my hosts file and everything is as it should be, no duplicates and all the addresses are correct. VERY frustrating.

I copied the .ipsw file to my MacBook and tried the restore and everything worked perfectly. Thank god I have another computer! At least it's fixed now but this issue needs to be solved by Apple.
