Note: AirDrop for iOS supports only iOS 7 devices. You cannot use AirDrop on iOS to share with OS X, and OS X users can't use AirDrop to share with iOS devices.

    Yes, I was surprised too!

Thanks for this answer—I couldn't figure out the problem. As it turns out, AirDrop is really pretty useless for me, but at least there's not a problem with my computer!

I'm startled that Apple would use the name AirDrop for what are essentially two separate systems. Reminds me of the great confusion that surrounded the term Airport. Any idea where one can make a comment that Apple will actaully read? Because I'm pretty certain they don't pay much attnetion to support forums. I'd like to tell them how cheated I feel with misleading use of the name AirDrop. I thought that I would FINALLY have an easy way to drop documents on my iPad from the computer without having to rely on iCloud.

I cannot believe this! I have an iPad, iPhone, and Mac Mini and got the Mini recently, thinking it would be a good base station for my two ios devices. Guess I'll have to keep using Dropbox and why most people would rather pay for Dropbox than for the iCloud scam.
