I'm having trouble using a projector with mini displat port to VGA adaptor and my Macbook Air.- it connects but won't show anything on screen other than when I check the display in systems preferences? Any ideas?

I had this problem with my MBair after updating to Mavericks. The Genius Bar solved it by doing two things:
1. Reset Power System
2. Reset Display setting
I don't want to say exactly how to do these things, for fear of giving inaccurate instructions, but both are done by holding down certain keys upon restart. I'm sure you'll find instructions elsewhere on the apple help site.
You have to set the duplicate monitor via the Monitor settings (after having the projector on), then you have to set the resolution and the monitor frequency at 70 Hz. This procedure worked for me.
