find my iphone app

my husband and self and 3 kids have iphone 4s with the new ios7 update. we use the find my iphone app to keep track on our teens. on a couple occasions the icon has gone grey like its been turned off, but the kid swears she didnt turn it off. has anyone else had this problem? is there a reason for it? or is my child just lying? 😟
