Unable to open 'docm' files on iOS 7

I have been unable to open email attachments with file extension 'docm' on iPhone 5 and iPad 3 running on iOS 7. This is a sort of downgrade for me. It's now like my android (HTC One X), which also cannot open them.

I had no problem reading them with iPhone 5 or iPad running on iOS 6. I get those attachements via gmail.

Does anyone know any ways to get around it?

iPhone 5, iOS 7, gmail, 'docm' files

I have a similar problem and since the update to IOS 7, I cannot open attachments on either my iphone 5 or iPad. I either get a message that says "Office Open XML word" or that the operation "Office Import Error Domain error 912", none of which happened prior to the update. Attachments would simply open. Has anyone else (I'm hoping?) experienced this issue?

Thanks

This has been a big issue for me too. Every time I submit a paper to my professor online, they send it back to me as a 'docm' file. I can't open this in iOS 7 on either my iPad-4 or my iPhone5. This is a real pain in my butt since I use my iPad and an external keyboard for grad school. None of the word processor apps on my iPad will open the file. I have tried: Notability, Pages 2.01, GoodReader, Quick Office, Dropbox, and Google Drive. I should also note, that Safari does not open the file either.

Has anyone found a solution for this for iOS 7 devises??? Currently, I have to use my Mac Mini at home to view these files.

If there are any young developers out there, I'm willing to pay $10 in the App Store for a solution to this issue. There are at least 3 people out there that are looking for a solution for this. I'm sure there are more out there.

OK. I figured out a round about solution to open .docm files that works for me most of the time.

Things that you will need: Google Drive (iOS app) and Pages (iOS app) or QuickOffice (iOS app)

Note: you will also need to have a Google acount (Gmail acount) to use Google Drive app.

Step 1:

Navigate to the .docm file on your iPad (either in Mail, Safari, Chrome, etc)

Step 2:

When you click to open the file, you then get a '(OfficeImportErrorDomain error 912.)' Error.

Step 3:

Tap neat the above error text to get the 'Open In' Button, then click on it.

Step 4:

Select 'Open in Google Drive' option

Step 5:

Google Drive will ask you if you want to upload the document to Google Drive. Select 'Upload'

Step 6:

Once uploaded to Google Drive, touch the 'i' icon (I guess it stands for 'infor') on the right side of the screen that is assosiated with that particular document.

Step 7:

From the documents 'Details' view, click on the name of the document and edit the file extension form '.docm' to '.doc'

Step 8:

Confirm that you wish to rename the file.

Step 9:

You should now be back in the file view of the Google Drive app. Now tap on the file that you just renamed to the '.doc' file extension. YOU WILL GET AN ERROR, stating 'Unable to open file type, this file type is not supported'. Below this, you will also have the option to 'Try opening this item in another app; Open in... ' - Select 'Open in..."

Step 10:

From the options of apps, select "Pages". This will upload the file to Pages and now you will be able to view your document!!!! (If you don't have Pages, this QuickOffice will also work)

I know this is a very round about way to view a '.docm' file. This is the only solution I have discovered so far. I hope in the near future Apple will add this type of file to be viewed natively in the iOS. If anyone out there comes up with a better solution, please post it here.

Note: I have tested this with Noteability and GoodReader and it DOES NOT work with these apps.

I wish people would listen! Yes Docm's are an issue . But the real problem is that I am recieving important information from someone who is not IT savvy. Their business is business not software jiggery pokey. They have NO idea how to overcome micro$oft defaults. Unless there is a way to overcome the idiocy between ms and apple and everyone else I will have to go back to the dark ages and kill a few trees and snail mail for each meeting!

Lawrence, thanks for the comment.

But your post is incorrect. QuickOffice and Pages WILL NOT open the '.docm' file type in iOS 7 (I just re-verified this). iOS 6 was able to open this type of document natively, however in iOS 7 '.docm' is an 'unknown file type'.

I took me several hours of testing to develope the 10 Steps needed to open a Macros enabled Word document in iOS 7, which is listed a few posts above. For those of us who have had to deal with this issue of '.docm' files on my iPad, it has truely been a nightmare since iOS7 was released.

I don't mean for this post to come accross as being harsh. Its the fact that when I first came accross this problem with .docm files, I endlessly searched the internet for a solution to it, but came up empty handed. I spent hours of my time coming up with a solution and then posteded it here to this forum. As far as I know, this website is the only place were the solution to this problem can be found.

Thanks Ryan, but as I indicated earlier your 10steps still did not work for me. the essential information was in text boxes or tables in the orginal and this information was entirely removed from the converted document.

I agre I would be willing to pay for an app that would allow me to read the content of what business associates send me. Noting that they are sending it with no more IT competance than "I'm sending it in an email." with "As an attachment" is you are lucky.

I just tried Documents to Go. It opened a complex .docm file containing tables, graphics, ToC, outline numbering, etc., and preserved all formatting. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/documents-to-go-standard-office/id317117961?mt=8

The standard version is $9.99; the premium is $8 more.
