Q: AirPort Express not found by AirPort Utility

Hi,

 

I bought an AirPort Express to hook into my stereo from my hardiwired Mac's iTunes via my linksys router. But the AirPort Express is not found by AirPort Utlility. Suggestions?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

I think I got it. The problem was that the computer only has one ethernet port, although the other looks like one.

 

Now I have to figure out how to set up iTunes to stream.

    In order for the AirPort Utility to find the new AirPort Express, you must first connect your Mac to the Express' wireless network. By default that network is named: Apple Network NNNNNN, where the N's are the last six digits of the AirPort's AirPort ID.

    Do you mean I have to disconnect the exisitng network for the moment?

    It's the wireless MAC address for the AirPort base station. It's also printed on the label on one of its sides.

    OK, the MAC aaddress. My AX has nothing printed on it.

    Actually, looking closer at the label, I can't find the MAC  address.

    Sorry about that. I realized that you mentioned that you have a 2nd generation Express and you are right the AirPort ID is not printed on the label on the bottom of the unit.

     

    It actually doesn't matter. What does matter is that your Mac can see the wireless network provided by the Express. By default, unless you had changed it, the wireless network will have a name like Apple Network NNNNNN. Connect your Mac to this wireless network to access the Express from the AirPort Utility.

    OK, sorry, but I just don't get this. My Mac is hardwired in to the network, via Ethernet. I pulled the Ethernet cable but there's nothing then for the AX to latch onto.

    If you have a 2nd gen Express it should have two Ethernet ports. The one with the circle-of-dots is the WAN port and should be the one connected to the Linksys by Ethernet. The other would be available for a wired device.

    Connect it to the Linsys? Or the modem? I tried that with themodem. If so, I must have used the wrong settings. What setting should I use ? I need to ask now because I lose my network connection when I lose the Linksys.

    Ok, it would help if you provide the complete info on your current network configuration that you are adding the AirPort Express to. For example, what are each of the network components (modem, routers, switches, etc.) that makes up this network? What is each of their make & models? So far, I just know that you have a Linksys and the Express ... and now a modem.

     

    What is your goal with the Express? To extend the wireless range of the Linksys or just for iTunes streaming and/or sharing a USB printer?

    There's a cable modem first; my ISP is TimeWarner. That goes to a Linksys wireless router. My Mac is wired into that and all other computers access the wireless. In adding the AirPort, I'd like it to access the same network and then plug into my stereo in order to stream internet radio and iTunes into that. Its 2 rooms away.
