The modem is an Arris, TM502G.

Ok, thanks for the updates on your current network.

For reference, you can take a look at this Apple Support article on how to set up an AirPort Express for streaming.

The goal is to configure the Express to join the wireless network provided by the Linksys. You will NOT need to connect the Express to the Linksys by Ethernet at this time. Instead, I would like for you to temporarily connect your Mac to the Express' LAN port during the set up phase.

    • With the Express powered-off and not connected to anything perform the "factory default" reset on it.
    • Again remove the Express from power after the reset and bring it to the same room as the Linksys router. Do not plug it in yet.
    • Temporarily connect your Mac to the LAN (opposing arrows) port of the Express, and then, plug the Express into power. Allow it time to initialize.
    • You should now be able to access the Express using the AirPort Utility on your Mac. Reconfigure it as per the support article I provided earlier. Allow it time to restart, and then, remove it from power.
    • Disconnect your Mac from the Express, and then, bring the Express to the room where you will be connecting it to the stereo.
    • Connect the appropriate audio cable between the Express and the stereo.
    • Plug the Express back into power.

Hopefully, that should do the trick.

    Nothing.

Do I need to remove the network cable, i.e. the ethernet to the Linksys and modem, before I do it?

Sorry, but what are you referring to by "Nothing?"

You do NOT need to remove the Ethernet cable between the modem and the Linksys at this point.

Nothing = no change. It didn't work.

So you went through each of the steps I provided and it didn't resolve the issue ... is that correct? If so, then you may have a faulty Express.

I considered that, but I have I've found it using my hoursemate's iMac. I got as far as connecting to my Mac but again, it didn't show up in the AirPort Utility.

Is there a way to forget about this, and configure it from his computer, and then run it from mine?

    i.e. this didn't work:

"You should now be able to access the Express using the AirPort Utility on your Mac. Reconfigure it as per the support article I provided earlier. Allow it time to restart, and then, remove it from power."

It would be certainly worth a try.

Forgetting about the AirPort Utility for a minute. With the Express plugged into power can your Mac see its wireless network? That is, does it show up in the list of networks from the AirPort icon on the OS X menu bar? If so, can your Mac connect it this network?

Sorry about that. Not sure how I missed that and taking you down a bunny trail.

If your Mac is unable to access the Express while connected to it directly using an Ethernet cable, then it may be best to go with your suggestion to use another Mac to administer it.

However, there must be a reason that your Mac's AirPort Utility cannot find the Express. One of the options with the AirPort Utility is to "Configure other..." By default, your Express will be configured to have an IP address of 10.0.1.1. Most likely your Linksys is using a default range of 192.168.x.x.

If you select the Configure other option and enter 10.0.1.1 for the address can the utility see it now?

"An error occured while reading the configuration. Make sure your Apple Wi-Fi base station is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-6753)"

Are the two in/outs on the rear of my Mac Pro both the same, i.e. ethernet?

I think I got it. The problem was that the computer only has one ethernet port, although the other looks like one.

Now I have to figure out how to set up iTunes to stream.
