Hi Kurt  I tried the ibackupboot but like most folk I received that error with not enough memory to backup sooo I tried the above "Select Setting>General>Spotlight" etc and it definately worked although it has taken about 10 times to free up about 4GB.  I hope all this rsesetting via restore is ok for the phone? At any rate this was definatley useful.  Do you have any similar suggesitons for the mail (saved)?

    Ed

Hi mate glad it helped, reference to mail I deleted all emails in inbox, sent and deleted and then deleted my email account off my phone and then linked it back to my phone.

I try to delete emails quite regularly and texts especially with pictures mate to minimise the build up.

    Cheers kurt

    Hi Kurt

I am currently trying to free up 2GB of space with the saved messages and I have the ibackupbot, but it is telling me that I can not delete encrypted messages.  HELP!

have you tried the following before Ibot?

    1. Select Settings > General > Spotlight Search

    2. Un-Check Messages in the Spotlight Search

    3. Delete all text messages that show in the Messages app

    4. Open the multi-tasking bar by double tapping on the Home button

    5. Close ALL running applications

    6. Restart your phone

This worked for me had to repeat at least three times after doing a manual reset.

If not have you tried deleting the back up you did on iCloud and re backing up phone and trying again ( make sure you select the most recent backup you have done.

Let me know how you get on

    Cheers Kurt

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've been trying to permanently delete Messages off my phone for the last 6 weeks. Nothing I've read has worked, and I did not want to wipe my phone and start over. This thing actually worked the first time. Went from 1.2 gigs to 87 megs, a lot on a 16 gig phone. Curiously, it did not work on my son's 5s, which is identical to mine. Go figure.

I have spent the past couple weeks trying to figure out this problem and used Kurt's message and it worked. So happy. Freed up 10gb of data. The only thing I can add to this discussion is to LEAVE YOUR PHONE ALONE after you delete everything. If you restart the phone too quickly, it will stop deleting the message caches. Since the messages are deleting from view, it seems to us that they have instantaneously deleted itself, but you are deleting possibly tens of thousands of messages, photos and videos. Just put your phone down and go about your business for about 30-45 minutes and by the time you come back, everything will be gone and your GB will be ample.

ONCE AGAIN ---- AFTER YOU USE KURT'S METHOD, DO NOT USE YOUR PHONE OR TURN IT OFF!! Wait a bit, then do it. You will be happy. It is the best way to do it so you don't have to completely wipe your phone clean or download third party software.

I have a 5, not a 5s, but that method works. Just give it some time before you restart it.

This worked!!!!!! I was using Kurty999's original method but I was having to restart a bunch of times because I had 7GB of messages. But once I did everything Kurty said and waited about ten minutes, all my messages were gone! I can't believe the problem is solved.

Side note: I just realized I had turned messages back on in my spotlight search since trying this a bunch of times yesterday, and everything still deleted. Not sure what to take from that. I also backed up to iTunes before doing this. I have an iPhone 5, and I can't wait to try it on my iPad!

Your problem is that your messages are being saved in iCloud.  Go to Settings> iCloud> Turn Off Documents&Data.  Now go to the messages app> edit> and delete all the messages.  After you have deleted all your messages turn your phone off and then back on.  Go to Settings> General> Usage and check if all has been deleted.  I have done this a few times... deleting in groups and have watched the GBs used decrease each time.

Hope this helps... this was a frustrating process for me!

You seem to be the one who has fixed this problem.  Mines won't budge.  I uncheck messages but nothing happens. I don't see anything in the messages app to delete.  Am I missing a step. Help please?

Yes, agreed.  APPLE, why do you refuse to respond?  I absolutely hate it that Apple does not answer any support questions on the web.
