Volumes in time machine

I just got an airport extreme and am going to hook up my external hdd I've been using with time machine to the A.E. for wirelass backup. It is wanting to start a new time machine volume. Is there a way to configure it so it uses my old time machine volume? I tend to run around a lot with my macbook and it says it will take way more time to backup than I want to sit (more than overnight!). Thanks

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), Actually 10.8.3

If you've been backing up to an AirDisk on a pre-802.11ac AirPort base station, then you've been using an unsupported configuration and your backups are untrustworthy. Put the drive aside and don't use it at all until you're sure you'll no longer need the data on it, then erase it and start over. Meanwhile start a new backup on another drive directly connected to the computer.
