when I updated, I got a picture of the back of the Apple TV box, with a white cord close to the iTunes app icon. What does this mean? I've never connected the box to anything.....

It means the update failed and your AppleTV can't start.

You need to restore by connecting to a computer running current iTunes via a USB to micro USB cable.
