How long does it take

After updating mountain lion in order to get the latest one, you have to restart your laptop, in my case a MacBook Pro, how long does the restart usually take as mine has been going on for 30 minutes + now and am worried as nothing has come up on the screen apart from a grey background and my mouse. Any help would be nice and thank you in advance for any replies
