I would like to upload all the photos from my Ipad 2 to my PC, so I can then transfer the photos on an external hard drive for ultimate storage. How do I accomplish that Herculean feat?

I am aware ITunes can do this, but where do I find the file where the photos are after the transfer? Can you give me a step-by-step to get me to that point?
