Updated my AppleTv to 6.0 yesterday and all I get is a pic of a usb going into iTunes. I no longer have my remote and have just been using the Remote App. Do I need the physical remote present in order to finish?
You have to buy the cable pictured or take your AppleTV to an Apple store exact same thing happened to me
To begin with you need to restore via iTunes.
The pic means means the update failed and your AppleTV can't start.
You need to restore by connecting to a computer running current iTunes via a USB to micro USB cable.

Pay attention to differences in power connection depending on whether or not you have AppleTV2 or AppleTV 3.
If you have an iPhone with iOS 7 then supposedly the new software may allow you to set up AppleTV using Bluetooth to assign network settings etc. If not you will need a new remote.
