Is texted a word or is there something different like mouse - mice. Anyways I called from my home phone it rang and showed up as No Caller ID underneath it unknown so I am not so sure this is going to work

thanks but looks like a no go. Ain't gonna work and I have in settings Do Not Disturb-manual(off) Scheduled (off)Allow calls from (All Contacts)  Repeated calls on Silence-Always

So am I missing something? because with those settings the No Caller ID still rings my IPhoneIMG_0107.PNG

You need to have Do Not Disturb ON, then Allow calls from All Contacts. If DND is off, it is off and would not work. That is where you are going wrong.

Ronj218 "Manual" should be ON.  When it is on you will see the moon icon in the status bar.

The DND solution sounds good, but only if you use the Apple Stock comms apps.  I don't so this won't do for me.

Hopefully with the new APIs being released to app developers there will be a possibility of the iPhone knowing if notifcations from third party apps are to be allowed through or not.  Or better yet Apple actually addressed this issue in iOS 8 directly!

I downloaded a silent ringtone and made it my default ringtone.  Then I went through my contacts and set all the ones of people I talk with to something audible.  This took much less time than I thought it would.  Now "number unknowns" don't ring.  Telemarketers calling for the first time don't ring.  I figure anyone not in my contacts who really needs to talk to me will leave a message anyway.  It's a radical solution, but it works great for me.

OK so far so good I called from my home phone (no caller id ) no ring no vibrate called from my wifes phone it rang with her ringtone. I didn't use a silent ringtone for no caller id. So now I'll try friends it should work. So far this method has worked the best thanks to DTM82

The last time I tried something like that no one got through.

I'm not sure if I get a tone on text messages. Nope no tone on text messages hmm how can I separate them I want to get text messages I only get them from my contacts no one else.

This sounds like an excellent solution Steve.  I will try it as soon as I get the chance to set it up.

Ronj218, I had thought that DND worked for calls, texts and emails.  Hence the need for favourites and VIPs whose notifications should always get through even with DND on.  But looking closely at the DND settings themselves it seems that perhaps it is only designed to work with phonecalls, all other notifications (including SMS and emails) are grouped together and silenced.

If I am correct on this point you might have to go down the route that Steve outlined just above your last post.

I believe there is a solution wherein only calls from your known contacts will ring on your phone and all other calls, including unknown callers, will be redirected to your voicemail.

Use your Do Not Disturb feature to only allow calls from known contacts.  Other calls will be immediately directed to your voicemail.

    • Settings
    • Do Not Disturb
    • Select Manual
    • Select "Allow Calls From All Contacts"

Remeber to check your voicemail and add new contacts as appropriate.

The blocking all calls not on my contacts is an option. But lately, my son, who lives in California and has an iPHone with the same carrier has been coming up on my id as UNKNOWN. grrr
