SSD failure

I am reading reports of SSD failure across the internet with the 2012 macbook air. It seems to be most common with the 128 GB toshiba module. I do have a MBA 5.2 that was 6 days out of warranty when the ssd died. I am looking to find if this is a widespread problem or whether I am just the unlucky one. If this is a widespread problem - why doesn't apple increase its warranty period???

It is not a widespread problem. This is board for people with problems. If more than a dozen people come here out of 10s of 1000s of "X" product there is an illogical conclusion that there is a "widespread issue".

A small handful of Sandforce controllers on the Toshiba SSD have failed on a limited number of users. The controller is the SSD processor.

widespread [ˈwaɪdˌsprɛd]

2. Occurring widely, known to be common

If you surround yourself with "sick people with the flu", youll inevitably think the whole world is sick and in bed,....likewise boards specifically aimed to congregate people with problems for help has that side effect. 😊

Of course, alas, when you/myself mention this obvious fact, it unfortunately upsets those who DO have a failed SSD,...........however its the truth none the less.

It seems to be a common problem on the forums at the moment. I myself have had my 2012 MBA SSD die on me as well and ended up with a replacement computer last weekend because the store couldn't order in the SSD replacement within the two week time frame (they were surprised they couldn't get hold of the part and had never seen that happen before). I've seen people from across the world with the same issue. Try taking your computer to Apple and see what they say about the replacement drive. I've been reading that a lot of people have had their warranties extended if they call Apple and some have reported that the repair costs have been removed when they try and order the part. Seems like Apple knows there is a problem with the SSD even if there is no official announcement yet.
