10.5.8 to snow leopard

I am trying to install snow leopard to my Macbook Pro. However, when I run the disc, it gives me an error message. "The application "Install Mac OS X" cannot be used from this volume." I have tried partioning, but it does not allow me to change anything. I read the instructions it came with and offers no help. Can someone let me know how I can install the program? Thanks

Where'd this DVD disk come from? In general, there are three sorts of Snow Leopard disks around. The (black) Apple Snow Leopard retail disks (currently US$20) and these retail disks can be used on any Mac, there are the Apple system-specific (grey) Snow Leopard disks that are tied to a particular Mac, and then there are the home-created DVD installer disks, and that are anybody's guess as to what they contain.

Here are the Snow Leopard system requirements, FWIW.
