Can't figure out how to save an image or picture on a Mac

How in the world do you save a picture or image on a Mac? I know how to do it on a Windows PC but not on a Mac. When I go to (file) on the Mac click on save as it only offers me to save the picture as a web archive so I save it, then when I click choose and click on what I want I get an empty box where the picture is supposed to go and it says it isn't in the right format it as to be JPEG and some other image type format.

Thanks!

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Highlighting it with left mouse click,..... drag upwards (or down) to highlight, ....then hit CMD + C (to copy)

Not from a camera a picture from my contacts. I want to copy a picture from my contacts and put it in another place in contacts a box where's there's no image for a contact. I don't know what you mean by control click. Do you mean right click? To tell you the truth I'm in a library now using an iMac and the right click on the mouse doesn't do anything but when I get home I'll still have to do it on my MacBook Pro.

Hi Grant, thanks for the help but this didn't work. When I went to the I clicked on the picture it did nothing and when I went to the edit menu both copy & paste were greyed out. When I right click it offers to save frame as in pictures as contacts and a (web archive, then when I go to choose that in pictures what comes up in the blank box is that it's in an invalid format which of course would be web archives. Doesn't offer to save as image or JPEG or anything like that just web archive and page.

Well you know what I'll just wait till I get on a Dell computer and be able to do it. The picture that I had in contacts had accidentally been erased by me tonight so it was there before but I put in on with a Dell. Can't do it on the Mac. It's not like it's not possible to do. The picture was there before but had to be put on with a PC. I don't copy images often enough to have to spend $5.99 on an app. This is only for my contacts list but I would like to know how to do it on the Mac without any extra stuff that I have to purchase. But thanks anyway!

What happens is a box opens up and offers to save frame as, then when I click on save frame as another box drops down and wants to save the image in the pictures folder as a (web archive) which is not a valid format. So then it shows up as (contacts) in the pictures folder as a web archive not a JPEG or other picture format and then when I choose what goes in the blank box instead of the picture is a message saying it's an invalid format and it must be a JPEG and 3 others I can't remember formats for images.
