How do I "block" contacts on my iphone 5C

After upgrading my iPhone 4S to iOS 7 I discovered that within Contacts I now have the option to 'block' a contact which is awesome! 🙂 My wife has an iPhone 5 and also now has this capability. My service is through AT&T Wireless and her's is Verizon.

But the new iPhone 5C I purchased for my college aged daughter (also on Verizon) does NOT have this capability. Is this feature not available on the 5C? Or is this a Verizon 5C thing? Since the 5C is described as the 5, only in a cost reduced hardware platform it SHOULD have this capability as my wife's does. I feel misled.

If it is an attempt by Apple to differentiate the 5C and 5S, why didn't Apple make this OBVIOUS in their literature??? Knowing of this difference, and any others that are yet to be found, I may have purchased the 5S instead.

Having this capability on the 5C should not require an app to be installed, free or not.

Thanks in advance for any clarity / insight on this.

Interested in knowing if anyone else with a 5C can tell me if they have this feature available who might be on a carrier other than Verizon.

I beleive the Contact Blocking is an iOS 7 feature, hence why your iPhone 4S & 5 now has it where it didn't before.

I know of the following areas where you can block a contact.

  • Any Contact with IN the Phone app
  • Any "Unknown Number" in the Recent tab in the Phone app
  • Any Contact with in iMessages... Click the name at the top, then the i with a circle around it. Scroll to the bottom.
  • Settings---> Phone---> Blocked---> Add New

However, from what it looks like you can not block any contacts from with in the Contact app.

You may want to look into Verizon's own blocking system, this is done on they're end. So the phone won't even see it, and it's for any type of phone. Just sign into your VW account.

Left column you should see "Block Services."

Center/top Manage Family Safegaurds and Controls.

Then the very first one should be Call & Message Blocking

Right side of screen is the View Details & Edit. Select that, then you can select which phone you want to apply the blocking to. Once on that screen you can enter the number(s) to be blocked. You can make it so it's for just that phone you want to apply to it. Or all the phones on the plane.

Just make sure that you know that it blocks the number for 90 days, but you can reblock it once the 90 days are up. And that you only have 5 sets of numbers per phoneline.

I've used it in the past and the people who've been calling me hasn't call me since. Even after the 90 day blocking period. Probably because they got the hint. lol

Thanks King of Typos! You found the root cause of the problem. You said, "However, from what it looks like you can not block any contacts from with in the Contact app." This is exactly how my daughter had been trying to block someone.

As you pointed out, the option to 'block' someone is available from with IN the phone app, and opening the contact there.

After a little thought, this made complete sense. If I were able to block someone from within the Contacts app I would expect that person to be blocked in every app; phone, iMessage, and any other app that relies on information from Contacts. But this is not how it works, at least not yet... 😉
