After updating ipad 2 to ios 7 ,stuck in loop between restore from itunes, set up assistant, connect to itunes then again restore from back up.

I updated my ipad 2 gsm jul-2011 model a 1396 to ios 7 for the first time.I backed it up before starting. my itunes is latest version.I have never updated ipad software before.I am afraid i have no experience of using itunes. after updating i restore it from itunes. I followed set up assistant. connected it to itunes. Itunes shows my ipad- the usual summery screen, etc. then I am stuck. If I restore it from back up the loop continues. Now I m stuck in loop between restore from itunes, set up assistant, connect to itunes then again restore from back up.

Hi,

Also saw this happening - in a loop with restore from ios 4.4 > 7.0 after upgrading via itunes on PC

Looks like as it was an old ios version it didn't have any of the icloud setup on it, so setup assistant, even though it had all media and apps restored after the upgrade, assumed it hadn't been setup

Just click on setup as a new ipad, it will ask you to log in to icloud and then ask about setting up backups automatically e.t.c. - just go through the options and it will then exit the setup assistant and finish the upgrade to ios 7

hope that helps

Hey mithun2013....I faced similar problem..four days ago i tried to update my ipad 2(WIFI) throught wireless connection coz my cable was busted at the time...once or twice the download failed..message was error in downloading ios 7....third time it started installing but crashed in the middle i guess...then it stuck at "connect to itunes"....anyways...tried everything...itunes restore , redsn0w, tinyumbrella etc...i followed all istructions in Apple discussion pages...i tried in two different computers at first...but last night my bro got a new samsung laptop..thought I should try it and it magically started restoring via itunes...u never know where the solution lies...so i suggest you follow apple instructions..if they don't help just change computer...good luck with your ipad..you can ask any questions

Thank you Lard007! This worked for me too!! I was in the same infinite loop trying to restore backup from iTunes. I was reluctant to "setup as new iPad" because I thought it would erase everything and go back to factory settings. But after hours of trying to get out of Groundhog Day I just closed my eyes, hit "setup as new iPad", opened my eyes and FINALLY my iPad was BACK. Everything, apps, photos etc still there!!

I too was attempting the big leap over the chasm from ioS 4.x to ios 7.x on an ipad2 these past few days. After reading sundry suggestions on prepatory steps before making the update, I had used a direct connection of ipad2 to my windoz-based laptop and iTunes in order to make as complete a backup as possible. I also separately made efforts to do non-iTunes backup methods such as exporting camera roll to MyPictures on Windows. Found ways to backup my contacts with a vCard app, too. Transferred all my purchases to iTunes, etc., as suggested in the numerous upgrading suggestion threads...

OK, so I then proceeded to upgrade the ioS via iTunes connection to my PC (the only choice since I was on 4.3.3 ioS and could not use OTA method). The upgrade appeared to occur without issue. When I finally saw the "HELLO" in multiple languages, did the swipe, entered language choice, entered my network credentials, etc, I ended up with choice of treating ipad as new, or restoring from a backup via itunes. At the time, it seemed to make sense to choose the latter and restore from the backup I'd so carefully made previously. Did the restore from backup via iTunes. (Notes: Be sure iTunes is of latest available version AND in Edit/Preferences/Devices be sure to put Check Mark in the "Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically" checkbox--worry about syncing later).

Upon selecting the restore from backup option, I observed ipad to appear to be restoring correctly and then, at the end of the progress bar as observed on the ipad2, the looping began and I was back to the "HELLO" swipe in multiple languages. I agree with another poster above that this is likely an oversight by Apples developers to account for those of us updating from ancient ioS's that didn't have iClouds support.

It appears that when you select the restore from backup option and let it proceed, things ARE actually restoring, but you'd never guess that by virtue of ending back up at the "HELLO" setup stuff. As above poster(s) have mentioned in this, and other similar threads, have some faith that YOUR backup DID actually get restored properly. Then, as you loop through the setup again, DO then select the option to treat ipad as "NEW" and you will be pleasantly surprised to be walked through a bunch of new stuff, mostly related to iClouds setup, and when you exit out of the update tunnel, voila, your prized backup should be evident. At least mine was, PHEW!!!!

I, also, upgraded from 5.1.1 to 7.0.4 and got the same thing. My iPad 2 was jailbroken, so I upgraded to ios 7.0.4 and then tried to restore from my itunes backup. Each time, it would restart with the "hello" screen and ask me where I wanted to setup from. Of course, I thought the same thing, that if I setup as a new ipad, I would lose everything in my backup. So, I kept doing the same thing, by restoring, updating, etc. Finally, I read this post and tried the "new user" option. And sure enough. I got all of my "apple" apps back. Thanks a whole lot!!!

I needed to take a backup from an ipad 2 running os 4.3.1. and do a restore onto a new ipad air running os9. After hours of frustration on phone support with Apple, I found these posts and they did the trick. Just as MyHeadHurtz describes, after choosing Restore from a Backup in the Itunes setup of the new iPad (at which point I could see my Apps on the Home Screen in the Itunes interface for the iPad), it would go back to the Hello screen. As instructed, I did Set Up as New iPad and choose all the modern options (not skipping any steps). The "updating iCloud settings" ran for a couple of hours and appeared to be hung up. I powered off and restarted, at which point the whole Setup as New iPad went smoothly and all my apps and files from the iPad 2 are there. Thank you so much for this guidance!!
