Trackpad does not work properly

More often than not the trackpad stops working. Sometimes when I turn the notebook on, it doesn't work at all. This is very distressing as I cannot do anything unless I can use the trackpad. It sometimes continues to work ok and then suddenly stops or the cursor behaves in erratic ways. How can I fix this?

MacBook Air (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

In the end, I took my notebook to Apple and they said it was a known problem and they replaced the trackpad for me.

I am also having this issue. Other than replacing the trackpad is there anything else to try? It is beyond frustrating because this has happened before.
