How to backup an external drive using Time Machine?

I understand that I have to remove the external drive from the excluded list. However, the external drive that I wish to backup is grayed out. Is it because of the format of that disk or else?

The external drive is an ADATA HE720 Windows format. I believe that's the problem, but what format should I reformat it into? thanks!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

To back up a disk with Time Machine, it has to be formatted in HFS+.

As your external drive is formatted in NTFS or FAT, you can't make backups of it. Use Disk Utility to format your external drive in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.htmlYou won't be able to read the external disk in Windows, and copy the files of your external disk to your MacBook before formatting
