I have a Probook running 10.7.5 and have compressed the 60Gb MobileSync folder into a zip file that is... 60Gb, the original file is still there so I have just lost another 60Gb of space. What's going on?

Delete the original folder and empty the Trash to free up the space.

You still have the data in the .zip file when you need it.

Video and image formats, in most cases, are already compressed so they don't "shrink" as much as other file formats.
