Q: how to use airdrop between a macbook pro and my iphone 5S ?

The upcoming release of Yosemite will have a feature called "Handoff".  Pickup what you've been working on with one device on another device.  This sounds as though it will be as seamless as airdrop between iOS devices.

The reason I'm here now, is because I had some video on my iPhone that I want to edit in iMovie on my Mac, and was trying to airdrop it.  I've attempted airdrop from iOS devices before, never with any success, but shrugged my shoulders and found  a different way.  I was hoping to find out HOW to airdrop it, but, I'll message or email the clips and import into iMovie….

Why not simply import it into iPhoto on the computer from the iPhone the open it with iMovie?

It definitely seems ridiculous to me that there is no easy way to send a file to or from my iphone/ipad to iMac or Macbook. Should be as easy as swiping in the direction of the device if they are all on the same network and same Apple ID.

But as has been said, there are an enormous number of apps that will do precisely that.

I hate third party Apps from little developers. But that isn't the issue - when Apple sells the interconnectivity of devices as a major advantage over the competition, file sharing should be an elementary part of that vision. This thread should not even exist.

I'd be fine with an app to share with somebody else. But sharing between my own apple devices?! C'mon that should have been done years ago!

In order to transfer files between a Mac and and an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, your iOS device needs iOS 7 or later installed and your Mac needs to be a 2012 or later model.

Yep, they just added it in Yosemite.

You mean in order to use AirDrop.

I transfer files between my iPhone and Mac all the time without AirDrop

This is ridiculous... why can't older models (I have 2011) work with airdrop to iOS devices? Is Apple trying to phase out Macs like they do with iPhones? My Mac still works fine and I'm not about to pay another $2000 to buy a new one because Apple won't support my Mac.

So spend less than 2 dollars on an app that will do the same job then...

You will have to update your Mac to the latest OS Yosemite to use the airdrop feature between your iPhone 5s & Mac

But this was not possible when Skilitchii posted a year ago.

1. Right click on whatever you want to send.
2. Scroll down to share.
3. Then scroll down to air-share.
4. Make sure your iPhone or iPad is unlocked and open.
5. Whatever device you want to share with will then pop up on the left.
6. Click on it and it'll immediately show on your device.

I have a Macbook pro and iphone 5s, and I can send a bookmark link from the internet from MBPro to the iPhone 5s via AirDrop, but I could not send a photo from MBPro to iPhone 5s using Airdrop.  Airdrop photos between 2 iPhone 5s' worked just fine. 

I have this problem also, but found a workaround: If my computer and iPhone is NOT connected to a WiFi, then AirDrop works. So WiFi must be turned on on both devices, but not connected to any WiFi.

This is crazy but it works every time. And when connecting to a WiFi again it stops working.
