Image Capture "Failed to open a session on the device" - WORKING Epson scanner

First, let's get the obvious out of the way:

MBP Retina Mid-2012, 2.7GHz i7, 16GB, Mountain Lion 10.8.5

Epson Perfection V700 Photo - USB, not wireless - NOT locked

I know the scanner works because I can scan using Epson Scan software. No problems.

Unfortunately, I WANT to use Photoshop -- which now uses Image Capture. I actually got one scan done using it, then it gave me a blank scan window, then it gave me the "Failed to open a session" message.

I've seen comments about resetting the "Print & Scan" cache through System Prefs, but... I don't have any printers in my list (because I don't use one), so there's nothing to ctrl-click on!

So... any thoughts? Thanks!
