How to connect iPad to TV to view screen?

I have 2nd generation iPad which I would like to connect to TV via USB to watch videos and downloaded TV programmes from BBCi App. When I connect all I can view are photos. Is there any way of seeing videos and other Apps from iPad. Also have 1st Gen Apple TV which I could also connect iPad to via USB lead.

Any ideas please.?
