iPhone storage question

I have an iPhone 4 and am having problems with the storage. I have about 80 pictures (which says 2.2 GB) and NO apps, yet it says I have used 4.3 GB. I have deleted everything possible, turned it on and off several times and tried plugging into my computer to find what's talking up this space with no luck! I need to do an update, but can't until I have 2.9 GB. I need some help and guidance before I throw this thing out the window!! Any ideas??

Connect your phone to iTunes on your computer, select the phone front eh left and click on the summary tab. Have a look along the bottom of the screen where it displays memory usage and see what "other" says. If it is greater than 1GB then that is your problem

OTHER DATA

Other data on your device should only be about 1.5GB and larger than this may indicate corrupt data.

To get rid of it you need to restore not from a backup.
