ipad disabled itself?? Ipad 3, ios7 (yes... it is actually a 3 :( )

I updated my ipad to ios7. Loved it, great.

I'm sitting here working on my computer. Ipad is near me, not plugged it, not being used, not low on battery. I hear it make a sound, softer than a notification, and I look over. The screen woke up for a second then went dark again. I picked it up and hit the home button. I'm confronted with "ipad disabled" in the middle.

I wasn't even using it. Hadn't in hours. No one was near it??? I've never entered the passcode wrong. Not even once.

What happened??? How do I fix it?? I can't restore it, as that will wipe out data that needs to stay in place for the moment. My last back up was right before I upgraded to Ios7. Usually I always have everything set to go through the cloud.

Just tried to Restore from Backup....

I get the message to disable Find My Iphone on my ipad before I can restore..

What the heck Apple??? I can't access the ipad because it magically decided to disable itself. I can't turn off an app I can't get to. I can't make a new ios7 backup right now because it's disabled. I can't un-disable it unless I do a restore.

Restoring your iPad

If you can't restore then you will probably neeed to force recovery mode

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808

Once your iPad has recovered, you will be asked to enter your Apple ID details to unlock it.

You will now be presented with the Welcome / Getting Started setup wizard.

Hopefully you have a recent backup, which you will then be able to restore to get your iPad back the way it was.

It's probably worth changing your Apple ID password, just in case the lock was caused by someone with illicit access to your account.
