Q: iOS 7 - Airdrop Problems

My brother and I both have the iPhone 5S.  My kids each have iPad Minis.  All are using iOS 7.  All are AirDrop-capable.  None of the devices detect each other properly using AirDrop.  First, we all have our own iCloud accounts and are logged in.  Second, we all have each other listed in our contacts, including the iCloud account email in everybody's respective contact.  Third, we all have "AirDrop: Contacts Only" turned on.  And, fourth, we all have WiFi and Bluetooth turned on and the devices are in close proximilty to each other.  And when I try to send a file to any of the other devices, not a single one of the devices are detected by AirDrop.  None!  The only way I can get the devices to detect another device is to turn AirDrop to "AirDrop: Everbody" on the devices.  Even then, the contact icon doesn't show up in the AirDrop screen.  It's just a generic grey head.  And even then the AirDrop will only work if the devices currently have their screens on and are unlocked at the home screen.  If the devices are on, but have the screens turned off, they are undetectable.  Anybody else have this problem detecting other AirDrop users?  Something is wrong.

I just dealt with this very issue, and I am here to say that the distance between the phones makes all the difference. I could not get it to work until I moved until i was standing directly next to the other person, then it worked fine.

We were both on the same Wi-Fi, both had bluetooth on, both phones unlocked, both had AirDrop set to "Everyone"

    Me too. Tried EVERYTHING!!

Only works when it wants to.

It's so unreliable that it is much much easier to email or anything else.

    AirDrop is greatly flawed.

AirDrop Started to work again after I've completely turned off my iPhone.

I guess something was "holding it back"...

    I have a similar problem.

I just transfered some pictures from my iPhone 5S to my iPad Mini and all worked fine, however when I try to transfer those same photos to my iMac, then the iPhone does not seem to find the iMac.

Both Bluetooth and WiFi are switched on (on both devices), both devices are logged onto the same WiFi network and I've enabled Airdrop to airdrop "everybody."

    Very strange...

edit: okay, I just found out that apparently airdropping between iOS7 --> OS X (Mavericks) or v.v. is not supported. I wrongly assumed that "Airdrop" logo on both devices means that you can actually airdrop something...  Hmmm, very confusing to have two devices from the same manufacturer with the same fruit logo on it, and who both have a feature called "Airdrop" and now it doesn't work together.... great!

Apparently iOS8 and OS Yosemite will fix this issue.

This would be an excellent feature IF it worked.  I would love to take photos with my phone, airdrop it to my MAC Pro (that I just spent LOADS of $$ on!) and then to be able to use that photo for my keynotes I'm working on right then.  But I guess I can just stick to iMessaging my photos and then dragging them to what I'm working on.  Just seems like a silly "feature" to have when I can just iMessage it.

Hey everyone, I also just figured out that if you have multiple email addresses for a contact, you need to make sure that your Apple ID email is the first one listed for the contact.

I was having trouble finding my iPhone 5 with my iPad Air.  But my iPhone was able to detect my iPad.  On my iPhone, my contact info had my Apple ID email first and work email second.  On my iPad, it was reversed.  Once I put the Apple ID email first on my iPad, it was then able to find my iPhone.

    I hope this helps someone!

I am also having great issues with AirDrop, ever since it came out in iOS7 and now in iOS8. It is ridiculously unreliable, really cannot believe it's an Apple built-in feature. I have a 5s running, an iPad Air and my wife has a 5C, all of them running iOS8.1. I also use a retina MacbookPro running Yosemite. Between any two of these 2 devices, AirDrop works only when the stars align or something. Most of time the device I want to send something TO sees the device I want to send the picture/video/whatever FROM but not the other way around. It's like its mocking me. It became so frustrating that I don't even try anymore, I just go through email/dropbox or other means that actually work. My devices are always on the same wifi network, the iOS devices are always set to accept from "Everyone" and yet it only works when it wants to. I am 100% positive it's not a configuration issue because I never mess around with it and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I trully do not understand how something like that gets through testing and furthermore gets carried away one year later to the next version of the OS, specifically when it has been worked on to make compatible with MacOS. It's terribly dissapointing....

I have an iphone 5s and yosemite on the imac late 2013 running yosemite.  I was able to airdrop content from my iphone 5s to my mac, but now I cannot.  Both logged into the same apple account, both on the same wireless network.  My mac cannot see my phone or vice versa. I can wireless back up my phone to itunes.  So i agree with everyones assessment that airdrop is unreliable.  Thought the feature was real cool, until i wasted 90 minutes trying to get it to work.

I Found out In addition to theses comments that changing the generic "iPhone" name to a different name Finally worked for me.
