Calendar colors

In all my years of using iCal and Calendar, I still can't figure out why Apple forces pastel colors (with black print) on us. All other calendars have the option of using the actual selected (darker) colors and white print. To some, this is more readable and aesthetically pleasing. Anyone know of a trick to change this in Apple Calendar?
