iOS 7 big problem on iPad 2 used by autistic child

I am having a lot of problems with my son's iPad. He is 7 and on the Autism Spectrum. He is learning to use his iPad as his only means of communication. Since updating it to iOS 7, it runs so poorly that he doesn't want to use it at all. Freezing up and slow processing are not things he understands nor does he have patience for waiting on his communication app to work properly.

Please there has to be a solution to get his iPad to function the way it was before. His communication app is not available for an Android device so we are stuck with the iPad. He has been using it for over a year now and I would hate to have to take a step backwards to start fresh with a completely new communication device. I thought of the iPad as a godsend when we got it with how well he has been able to learn with it. Now I am thinking Apple is cruel and heartless corporation with no thought for their customers needs.

Standard troubleshooting...

1. Try a Restart by pressing the sleep/lock button until you see the slider. Slide to power off. Restart by pressing the sleep/lock button until you see the Apple logo.

2. Try a Reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider if it comes up. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

3. Remove all apps from Recently Used list...

- From any Home Screen, double tap the home button to bring up the Recents List

- Swipe up on the app card to remove it

- Tap the home button when done.

4. If still a problem restore with your backup.

5. If still a problem restore as new, i.e. without your backup. See how it runs with nothing synced to it.

6. If still a problem, it's likely a hardware issue.

thanks, paulcb,

I had to leave for work but left it restoring as new this morning. It will need to be able to run his educational and communication apps at the very least for it to be useful for him. I have recommended an iPad to several other parents I know who have kids on the spectrum. If the new iOS will not work with his apps, do you think I can purchase an iPad with an older iOS installed on it?

I too am having the exact same issues, freezing, locking, huge delays, very very slow, on an iPad2. Even apps crashing much more frequently. Hard resetting via the buttons and restoring from the backup haven't done anything. :-(

Other people experiencing these same issues on iPad2 and iPhone4 say that disabling iCloud under settings fixes the issue for them. It didn't for me, but it is worth a try, seems to help in a large number of cases.

And let me appologize on behalf of all of us here that anyone on these forums could be so heartless as to read your plea for help as a mother dealing with your situtation and be so worried that their favorite company might not be big enough to handle your frustration that they report you. We aren't all like that.

*IF* you do figure the issue out, please do post back so others can find the same solutuon you did.

Best of luck figuring your issue out.

Just came back to reply that I found a solution to my issue, thank goodness, this has been keeping me from using my iPad the way I used to for months.

The Fix for Me:

Disabling the iCloud settings was not enought to fix it for me, but deleting the iCloud account from my device was.
Voila, immedialty my device stopped choking on even the simplest task, and seems to be back to full speed.

I found this solution in a softpedia forum where hundreds of iPhone4 and iPad2 users were discussing this same issue with iOS7, and about 2/3 of the way down the discussion thread it was suggested that if disabling iCloud didn't fix the issue on your device, try deleting the account.

Even though everything was disabled under iCloud with no change, deleting it made an immediate huge difference. Bam. Night and Day difference.

Not sure why this works, but hopefully it works for you as well.

I've read that turning off Documents and Data in iCloud solves the lag/choke issue for many. When you deleted your iCloud account, you effectively did the same thing. You might try turning iCloud back on with that feature off and see how it runs.

Even with that feature and every other feature of iCloud turned off (disabled) it was still having issues, I had to delete the account. For most people just diabling works, but for about 10% of folks (judging from the thread) they actually have to delete their iCloud account settings altogether.

I tried the first disabling and turning off bit and thought that solution didn't work for me until I found the users posting about deleting the account altogether. That was the magic that fixed my iOS7 on iPad2. When I turn it back on the problems return immediatly.

Thanks for the assist and help.

More good news. This also fixed the other 3 issue i was having with iOS7.

1. I wouldn't see any newly loaded apps until i restarted my iPad, the icons just woulnd't be there, and clicking open from the app store or searching wouldn't launch them. They wouldn't be usable until restarting via pressing and holding home and power.

2. Apps would hang mid download and block any future apps from downloading untl the iPad was restarted via pressing and holding home and power.

3. When I switched between apps, sometimes the app i was switching to would crash and couldn't be relaunched even if closed via the double click home swipe up method. They'd just keep crashing until the iPad was restared via pressing and holding home and power.

All three probably related issues are gone now as well.
I'm a happy iPad owner again, especially since I didn't really need to use iCloud anyway.

My iPad is running as snappy and problem free as new. Hurray!

Thanks again.
