Q: Can't airplay to ethernet AT3 from MBP over wifi
I have an AT3 and MBP with mountain lion, both fully updated. AT3 is connected to the router through ethernet, and MPB over wifi. As far as I know, both ethernet and wifi are the same network. Airplay icon won't show up on MBP unless connected over ethernet to the router. For some reason the airplay icon won't show up when the MBP is connected to the network over wifi. Does the AT3 and MBP have to be connected to the network over the same connection type? That would make zero sense. Does this sound more like a router setup issue? I have a basic linksys wireless router with i'm assuming mainly a default setup.

My understanding is that both devices must be on the same subnetwork. Your router may treat wifi and wired as different subnets. The airplay discovery process uses broadcast packets which are not routed between subnets. I had this problem long ago, and the fix was to use wifi for both devices. Search for airplay discovery to find the long explanation.
