Phone making sounds unexpectedly

I recently updated my phone to the new operating system. Since doing that I have reset the sounds and chose vibrate only for new mail. However, everytime I get a new e-mail my phone chimes. I don't know how to get it to stop. I would still like to hear the ringer and text alert, so I don't want to keep it on silent all the time, just don't want to hear chime 50 times a day for e-mail.
