Q: cant get my i pod to update

i got my sons I Pod touch (8gb) as he doesnt use it, it was fine till I tried to update the software via my laptop, now it continually shows the USB LEAD TO I TUNES LOGO.....and when I try to update it Laptop says its unable to as the software update server cannot be contacted or is unavailable all the time.

Update Server
Try:
- Powering off and then back on your router.
- iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
- Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers
Public DNS — Google Developers
OpenDNS IP Addresses
- For one user uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes resolved the problem
- Try on another computer/network
- Wait if it is an Apple problem

I have tried all these things, even uninstalled I tunes twice on 2 different laptops,keeps going through the whole set up and fails at the update part....its infuriating to say the least...thanks for your help though.
