huawei b593

Hi!

I just bought a Huawei B593 and it all works fine with my airport express, but when I try to expand the network with my airport extreme, it doesn't work. How do I configure this? I am really a beginner when it comes to this. I guess i have to configure WDS in some way, but how. Any tips?

You cannot extend wireless using AE from a non apple router.. you must use ethernet between the modem to the AE and use it as a separate AP.. the Express can then extend the wireless.. you can also do it the other way around. Apple extend wireless is not compatible with other brands.

It does support WDS if you use ancient old G wireless and WEP... don't do it.

Cable between Huawei 593 and AirPort Express, and then having AirPort Extreme expanding the network. Is that possible? How do I create a separate AP (short for Access Point, right?)

Yes.. correct.

The express is fine.. as long as it is an N model.

Plug it by ethernet into a computer might be easier.. (if it is the older single port one).. set it in bridge mode.

And then go to the wireless tab and setup a wireless network. That is AP.. or WAP.. access point or wireless access point to be more complete.

It might be good to set channels manually just to be a bit careful .. but auto works ok for most.

The early N express is single band so put it in 2.4ghz if you want the range. Or 5ghz if you want the speed but you need the Extreme close.

You create a wireless network.

Then update and plug the Express into the modem.

Now do the setup for the Extreme.. Just factory reset it.. when the AE comes backup click on the wifi icon in the top menu and you will it listed.. click it and it will open airport utility.. then just continue the automatic setup.. and it should complete a wireless extend to the express.

Just say if and where you run into issues.. there are loads of posts here about setting up wireless extend between express and extreme.
