Why has my I phone screen gone black with vertical lines and what can I do to put it right?

    i have something very similar (well my girlfriend does) with my iphone 4 since the new ios it has been running like crap, turning off and freezing all the time.

     

    the screen is frozen on what looks like a plank of wood with the grains and everything.
