wifi greyed out after update to ios7

After upgrading from a 100% functional iphone 4s from ios 6 to ios 7.

wifi stopped working. after reboot, wifi setting is greyed out. bluetooth button is shown as busy circle...

done: network reset, backup restore, dfu mode with fresh ios7 file....

turning wlan on in new config bar is available, but does not turn on wifi....

apple diagnostic tool said that I have a charging problem, but everything is fine with charging batteries.

I can not believe that there a so many coincidences with hardwareproblems?

Hey, I have the solution, and it's insane. But it works.

This video gives the instructions:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mVkiU2jNSE&feature=youtu.be

Basically, you overheat the phone with a hair dryer until it says it's too hot. It might take 5 minutes. Then put it in the fridge for 10. And wifi is back.

I just did it tonight. It worked. From comments on the video, it looks like it's a permanent fix.

I don't believe that iOS7 killed the wifi chip, I believe there is a deep bug on the software/hardware interface level that even exists on the diagnostic level. This overheating tricks that bug and allows the OS to see the chip as "healthy."

That's my only (layman) explanation. If the problem was truly hardware based, this solution could not work.

Just try it and if it works, pass it along. The guy who made the video deserves an award.

Took my 4s to apple yesterday to be told that this was a hardware problem and since my phone is out of warranty the only thing that can be done is a replacement at £159. The lying little ***** at apple also tryed to tell me that he had hardly seen any phones with the wifi greyed out, I work 40hrs a week in apple and I've hardly seen this he said. So I now own a brick that can only make phone calls with, unless I'm in the car because the Bluetooth don't work anymore either. Apple I need a phone that works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week so a windows phone it is for me I think as you don't care two f**ks about your customers.

...kind of works. I did it as described above. Once the phone cooled, sure enough - Wifi was able to be toggled and was already 'on/green'. However - it couldn't find any networks to connect to. So I restarted the phone and when it rebooted, Wifi was grayed out again. Argh!

Will try again in a little while but something is very funky in Denmark.

I know the bug is frustrating right? I had the same problem and when I contacted apple they were in denial for a moment, up until I proved it was not a rumour and that it is a known software issue, which they also say is a hardware issue, they are getting loads of money just from that.

Anyways the solution was:

Blow dry your phone mostly at the top (chip) and wait till your phone tells you the temperature is too hot and you need to cool it down. Then when it is back to normal it will either be connected to wifi or not. but if it is not connected to wifi restart your phone and you'll be good, I know it sounds funny, but just try it, I'm probably saving your a minimum $200, for a replacement.

Post what happened...

UPDATE:

I tried it again, same deal - heat until the overheat warning comes on, put it outside (where it;s 30*) for 10 minutes and check. The Wifi was NOT enabled, still grayed out. So I decided to restart the pnone. When it came back up, Wifi was enabled and asking me for the password to my secured home router.

It has been functioning/on for 1/2 hour to this point. Fingers crossed that it stays on...not sure I'll be downloading ANY Apple software updates though....

Many thanks to poster Trent Baur for the youtube link...watch that and give it a try!

ps - Apple ***** for putting us through this and having the potential 'fix' come from a youtube video. I feel so important.

The one additional thing I noticed after doing the blow-dry-iphone trick on the iPhone 4s is that, although I could toggle the wifi, it wasn't accepting the password for the network. So I went into the Airport Utility and essentially "changed" the password to what I'm pretty sure it was all along. And then the iPhone could reconnect. And it's been perfect since.

It's odd because my Macbook continued to connect to the network both before and after I "changed" the wifi password, confirming that it was the same password. But I think I did need to re-enter it on my iPhone 5.

The whole thing is screwy.
