wifi greyed out after update to ios7

After upgrading from a 100% functional iphone 4s from ios 6 to ios 7.

wifi stopped working. after reboot, wifi setting is greyed out. bluetooth button is shown as busy circle...

done: network reset, backup restore, dfu mode with fresh ios7 file....

turning wlan on in new config bar is available, but does not turn on wifi....

apple diagnostic tool said that I have a charging problem, but everything is fine with charging batteries.

I can not believe that there a so many coincidences with hardwareproblems?

I suggest trying this: Remove the SIM. Reboot the phone (hold HOME and SLEEP until an Apple logo appears). Try WiFi. Reinsert the SIM.

I've had the issue twice now. The first time I tried every other type of reset, freezing and heating possible. In the end my chip was replaced but the problem came back after updating to iOS7.0.1.

After trying the hard reboot without the sim, my phone seems to have wifi again.

This is an absolutely ridiculous problem!

I've tried every possible solution on my son's phone and cannot re-activate the wifi!

What is going on here?

Does Apple even read these posts?

The only solution they seem to have DOES NOT WORK!! --- maybe it does for some, but not for all, and that means it is NOT the solution.

Everything is fine on my Iphone that I REFUSE to update to IOS7 because of this issue.

Complete failure by Apple to solve this critical problem. Who is paying Verizon for the data usage when he goes over the monthly allowance? Should I send the bill to Apple?

Maybe you should read these discussions:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5331834?start=60&tstart=0

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5328365?start=390&tstart=0

Let me sum up my observations in this discussion.

Everyone having a problem in this discussion has the following problem:

  • All phone affected are IPhone 4s
  • All problems occured after the upgrade to iOS7
  • The issue we are experiencing is a greyed out WiFI button, which was not greyed out before.
  • We have tried all options advised by Apple to resolve this issue.
  • we are all unable to solve this problem ourselves constructively, although some of us have managed adhoc 'fixes' like hairdryers or using the fridge to 'cool off' the wifi chip.
  • Our iPhone 4s's were operating without any noticable problems prior to the upgrade to iOS7

The above makes me to draw the following conclusion:

There is a clear pattern and these are obviously not individual cases. It appears the wifi chip of the iPhone 4s is being of a substandard quality and not being not fully compatible with the new iOS firmware which causes this problem. Also most of the beta testing over the past months was done using the iPhone 5 and not the iPhone 4 or iPhone 4s. Mostlikely because the 4 series were not part of the large scale testing Apple was not fully aware of this accelerated issue with the Wifi chip (when you do a Google search on "iPhone greyed out wifi" you see that this issue is not new, and you see the issue involves mostly the 4s ) But it seems iOS 7 pushed these weak and thus unreliable wifi chips just over the edge, causing them to overheat and thus to stop functioning alltogether.

Apple must be fully aware of this issue by now but they are incredibly silent in communicating with their in my estimation 'multiple thousands' of customers worldwide experiencing this problem. Apple only sticks by claiming the upgrade to iOS7 is "at your own risk" (that's what I was told) and sticking to the warranty period

(I bought my iPhone in Aug 2012, so am out of Apple warranty)

I feel that Apple should take their responsibility and help her customers in solving this quality issue.

As customers in good faith we bought this product (I paid some €600) having trust in Apple and in the faith the quality would be such that we could use it -with good care of course- for at least 2, 3 or even 4 years.

But unknown to her trusting consumers Apple created a product using a faulty wifi chip (hence the overheating issues which can eventually lead to failure)

As result of this us, we, customers are now stuck with an unusuable iPhone for which we paid plenty of money.

( One thing I am sure of, if Apple would be a car manufacturer or an airplane manufacturer they would never get away with this, and would be forced to do a recall)

My message to Apple:

It is now time to act. Taking responsiblilty never hurts (even if you for some reason feel you are not fully to blame) It gives you credit. And credit gives you loyal customers.

Thank you.

Thanks it is exactly what you have summarized.

100% working iPhone 4S, after Update Wifi failed. I even can not downgrade to iOS6 to test, that this is a hardware failure, as Apple does not allow to downgrade it anymore. And as so many users have exactly the same failure I do not think that this is a hardware problem. There might be some iphone where the heat up or freezing helped. In this case I think this is a hardware failure, but for the rest of the others I do not believe in coincidences.

My device is just 1 year and 1 month old.

I have the exact same issue.

Iphone 4S working 100% for just over a year (new phone) until ios7, soon as that loaded my wifi started acting up and eventually would not turn on.

I went into the "genius bar", I was kind of disgusted that they simply plugged the phone in, and told me that my wifi chip had failed, I am out of warrenty and need to pay $300.00 to have it repaired.

I argued that its very coincidental that it works perfectly until ios7 upgrades and then these issues start, I was told there is no issues related to iPhone 4S and ios7.

When I said, thats not what I see across all the forum, this was ignored.

So I went and pulled down the ios7.02 ipws file from apple, since (thank you Apple) I cannot downgrade anymore.

I put the phone into recovery mode and pushed a fresh install of 7.02, I noticed magically wifi starts working while im activating my phone, I activate everything to see if I can get it to act up again, so far so good.

Then I get a popup saying there is a carrier settings update, I click apply, suddenyl my wifi falls over again, yet again I am unable to get it fixed. (back to square one)

So I start looking around online for any topics related to ios7, carrier update settings and wifi, no luck here.

I once again put the phone into recovery mode and force down ios7, the phone starts and whats activation and wifi yet again is working.

This time I ignore the carrier update popup and all is well for a few hours.

I go into Settings, Carrier and look at the carrier settings in here, I confirm these are already set correctly to those of t-mobile, I try to manually re-enter them and apply to see if it will stop the popup, it didnt.

So after a few hours of perfect wifi, I go into Settings>General>About and get the popup again (it always appears if you go in here if you didnt accept it), I accept it and then look at the carrier settings, it does not appear like it changed anything.

I have turned the wifi off and on a number of times, performed a number or restarts and and used the phone now for another few hours, so far wifi is working perfectly without issue.

I'm not sure if the carrrier update did or did not have anything to do with it or if it was just coincidence.

Thought Id post my observations so far, maybe it helps someone figure something out.

Did a long chat with apple support team guy about WiFi greyed out issue on my iPhone 4S and followed all steps he suggested to restore as a New Phone.....Nothing happen...even I restored from old backup as well as a new phone before his suggestion...The problem was same that time too...i.e. WiFi never came up after restore. Then He suggested me to setup the appointment at apple genious bar to check/diagnose the phone....He was supposing a h/w failure......I setup the appointment with apple geneius bar and went on time...Talk with the agent there and discussed my problem after upgrading my phone to iOS 7...He asked me to diagnose it and took my phone inside room, i was waiting outside...He return after 5 minutes and said the h/w failure that he was supposing before took my phone inside the room. I told him why it happens only with iOS 7 and not iOS 6...as my phone was working fine since last 1 & 1/2 Year. I said him millions of iPhone 4S user facing this issue only after iOS 7 upgradation. He asked me to pay $199 and take new phone with 90 days warranty, then I asked him...if same problem came in new phone on 91th days, will I pay again $199. He said Yes...my question is.....why apple fooling its customers with bad and cheap products like iOS 7 that failing the h/w of perfectally running phones with older iOS. why didn't apple did the proper testing with all versions of iPhone before releasing the iOS 7 in market...or apple did it intentionally to get the money from its customers as they know iOS 7 will fail the iPhone h/w and then customers will come to store to replace it...a good idea to earn money....

Apple is sure going to loose its millions of cutomers because of this cheap iOS 7...which is going to be another Vista from apple (like Vista from MSFT). iPhone users now moving to Samsung because of all these issues in iPhones now a days....if Apple will not take case, it will realize it later...
