iTunes Clean Install
I've had in my notes for quite a while a procedure to do a thorough uninstall and clean install of iTunes. Apparently, this procedure was " based on Apple Support article HT1926" and was good for Windows XP. Basically, the process was to uninstall all Apple-related programs, delete some left over folders in C:\Program Files, delete all the temp files, and then use an installer cleanup utility. Originally, the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility was suggested, but after Microsoft deprecated this, we switched to suggesting Revo Uninstaller. And now Microsoft has the "Installer/Uninstaller Troubleshooter" (and I have no idea whether this tool will help with respect to cleaning up after iTunes).
Are there any updated directions for Windows 7 x64?
I recently upgraded to iOS 7 and iTunes 11.1 and iTunes kept crashing immediately on opening. It took me a while of uninstalling, cleaning, rebooting, and finally starting iTunes in Safe Mode before I got things working properly ... but I don't know what the exact problem was or a systematic way to deal with similar problems when advising others.
