Login, Admin account missing

Im running 10.8.5 and have my main (admin) account plus a guest user account

Now today after waking up from sleep, in the login screen my main account is missing, thus only letting me access the guest account. I've tried disk utility so far and rebooting with no luck, my files are still under /Users/ but can't access them, going to sys preferences doesn't show the admin account and isn't letting me change anything since it doesn't recognize my password. I've never had this happened before, how can i make my main account appear at the login screen again?

MacBook Air, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

I'm having the same problem. Luckily I'm still able to log into another admin account, but it's not my main account. I see the missing account is still there in the Users & Groups preference pane.

Do you have a backup? If so, try reinstalling from the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions. Then reinstall.

ah, resolved my problem. that user account wasn't encrypted and my machine requires it for work. turning on FileVault solved it.

oddly, i *was* able to see the account on the first reboot after migrating the user account.
