Scanning problems

Since updating to 10.8.5 I'm unable to scan documents using HP OfficeJet 4500 - there are no software updates available and HP insists that all the necessary drivers are provided within Mountain Lion. Mac do not appear to even acknowledge there is a problem but from looking at other sites this is not solely a Mac/HP issue but also appears to have affected Canon and Epson printers as well.
